Heng mountain or Hengshan is further up about 30 mins from hanging monastery,a return taxi ride to the place from hanging monastery cost 400 CNY (shared by 4 persons),it is going on a winding road altitude about 1700 meters height.Temples were built scattered on the slope of the mountain,it is serene and peace, where the ancient people(Taoist) came here for meditation. It will take you one and half hour to climb up to reach the top of the temples, viewing down from the mountain is beautiful, I would recommend to go up by cable car and come down by foot will not be so tired
Following our trip to the Hengshan Hanging Temple, we came here to look at the other temples and enjoy the lovely scenery. We paid 55RMB to enter the park and then walked to the temples. The pathways were in excellent condition and there were toilet facilities at various points. The temples themselves are lovely and vary in size. There is information in English explaining what the various sites are. Water and other snacks are available to buy along the way. In total, we spent about 4 hours here. This is well worth doing should you be visiting the Hengshan Hanging Temple anyway.
This place is actually worth a visit just because you are heading to the Hanging Temple. You could be able to spend several hours to climb up thousand of steps in order to reach the temples on the mountain cliffs. During this months the cable way is not working, so you can just walk to the various temples, without any vehicle help. The path is not very different from Huangshan one, but of course with a worse view (Huangshan view breathtaking in comparison!). The temples on the side of the mountain are nice and enjoyable, but never forget that you are here just because it is close to your final spot: the marvelous Hanging Temple!I deeply recommend to visit Hengshan, before going to the Hanging Temple: if you do the contrary, you could get disappointed! The temples themselves are nothing different from the others you can find everywhere in China, just the location is different! To reach this place is pretty easy arranging a trip by cab or with your own vehicle. It is 2h far from Datong and just 10-15min far from Hanging Temple. I suggest you to arrange with a taxi driver the round trip in the area in this way: Hengshan - Hnaging Temple - Muta (Wooden Pagoda). You will spend around 400rmb in total and you will visit several spots in the same day. If you wake up early enough (7-8am) you will be able to be back in Datong around 4.30 pm to relax and enjoy the city.
I would say that the temples on these mountains are more impressive than the Hanging Monastery. When you initially take the cable car up the mountain, you see a few temple buildings hanging from the side of the mountain on the right side, almost at the top of the mountain over a 1000 feet from the ground (whereas the Hanging Monastery buildings are only a few hundred feet above the ground). After arriving near the top of the mountain, you can see different temples built on the side of the mountains. It's a nice hike to visit all of the temples - allow at least 3 hours to walk to the farthest temple, which is the one hanging off the cliff of the mountain. After seeing this sight, the Hanging Monastery, which is a 5 minute ride from here, was an anticlimax.
This was a wonderful experience! I love nature, hiking and visiting historical architecture bursting with culture and this experience combines all three. The paths leading up to the many temples and lookout points are surrounded by fragrant pine trees that help to cleanse your lungs of all the coal pollution from Datong.I highly recommend combining this trip with visiting the Hengeng Monastery which is practically next door. We ate lunch at a little stand next to the carpark and was impressed with the cleanliness and fresh taste of the food. Be warned, the cable car officially closes at 3pm so unfortunately, we did not get a chance to take it down from the top because it was already past 5pm when we realized and ended up trekking back by foot.
Lovely on a nice day. You can get a cable car up to the top (would advise) walking paths trailing the mountain to various chinese temples both free standing and built into the hillside. You could spend a couple of hours here easily.
