1 hour should be sufficient to complete. Took a 15 min cab ride at about 2,000 yen from Asahikawa JR station to the museum.
Otokoyama sake is a famous brand in Japan (also around the world). The brand served many Japan feudal lords and even Shoguns during Edo period. The museum is well-organized and free entrance. They have multi-languages pamphlets as well. After viewing all the stuffs on 2nd and 3rd floors, they give you free sake try-out (many time as you want with various types - some special editions require extra payment) The sakes were really fresh and nice :).The only dislike thing about this place is the location - they don't have frequent bus from the main station.
The short tour of the museum provided interesting history of how one of Japan finest sake is produced. We were told that the water use to produce the sake can promote longevity! The lower grade sake is free for tasting but you would have to pay to try their best sake...and it was totally worth it!! I ended buying a bottle of their best sake...naturally pure Dai Ginjo!! Smell very nice and is very smooth!! Paid about 4800 Yen and it was totally worth it!!
Worth stopping if in the area. The museum is interesting – guide spoke only Japanese. Sake maker has won many worldwide awards (on display). We had sake tasting after – all you want for the regular sake. 200-yen for their top award winning DAI GINJI brand. A beautiful garden is in the front of the museum. Their water is pure, said to have curative powers so you must take a glassful. Keep your empty water bottles and fill up should you get the chance. They allow locals to take a container home daily
I went to Asahikawa chaperoning six students on an exchange program. While spending time with a school principal he and a translator took me to the museum and it was great. I wasn't expecting to go there but it was welcome surprise. I tried several sakes and they were good. The principal purchased me a large bottle of sake to bring back to the states. It was a great experience.
This place is more a retail shop than a museum. There are 2 floors, each probably about 1000sf. On the 2nd level is to view the awards and the momentos while you can look through the glass windows into the brewery located on the 1st level. Can't learn much since they don't provide any tour.Half hour is what most people would spend, including tasting of their sake.
I am a fan of Otokoyama Sake, therefore II have to make a trip too this sake museum. Their sake is one of the best that I tried. Get the award winning ones is worth every $$$.
Smallish shop/museum where you can try and buy the awarding-winning sake, and see some exhibits about the history and manufacture of the stuff. Also has a small garden with free access to spring water.Free entry.
They provide free testing of different type of sake. Driver is strictly not allow to test. We drive there from Asahikawa Ramen Mura, it took about 15-20min. If you are driving with gps, you may use map code 79 469 169.
