This is a must on your to do list in Antigua. It is not easy to find but well worth the effort. It is so beautiful. The waves are fun to play in ;) There is a little restaurant there and they have restrooms. While we were there, there was a magazine photoshoot going on....fun.
We took the local bus from Jolly Harbour to St. John's and then from St. John's to Half Moon Bay. The nearest bus stop is about 1 km. from the beach but the bus driver drove us right down to the beach. It's a magnificent bay and beach with wild Atlantic waves on one side (but not too wild to keep kids from jumping the waves) and a calm stretch on the other side for swimming. Clear warm water. Be sure to climb the rocks on the calm side and walk along for a beautiful view. We went during the week and it was very quiet but apparently gets very busy on the weekends. There is a little restaurant right on the beach with serves delicious wraps.
It was very windy when we went to the beach. But the left side was good for swimming. Soft, white sand and beautiful cool water. It was fun to watch the waves break on the cliffs. It is worth the drive but there are no roadsigns and maps are of little use. We were quite surprised to find it at first try.
Went twice, once in the rain (had it all to ourselves) once on a nice day (maybe 20 other people).Great beach, beautiful water, scenery, and good snorkeling.
great reef and good selection of fish to see, we were part of a cateraman trip so had to move off with the main group before we were ready to go
Out of the way, but worth the drive. There are remains of old resorts that large storms destroyed. The natural beauty remains.
We were a little worried before venturing off to Half Moon Bay; we'd heard it was too isolated, roads were bad, etc. After spending the day at this gem we concluded that any negatives about this place are lies to keep it the quiet little secret it is!The sand is the softest we've ever had between our toes, the water is gorgeous, the ocean waves break at the entrance to the bay, providing a dramatic backdrop to the calm waters (on the north end) lapping at your feet. We were there on a day when there were 15,000 visitors off of cruise ships and yet there were only 8, yes EIGHT, people on this beach! Simply amazing.Walk around to the northern end of the bay and look up the coastline to islands, and rocky shoreline, the views are incredible. There are limited facilities here. Drinks and snacks are available along with ample parking. There was some natural shade from small trees lining the beach.
Off the beaten track, and with a wonderful beach bar. Loved the unspoilt atmsophere and lack of touristy infrastructure. There are no loos/changing facilities.
I'd recommend half moon bay, it's very scenic with a nice walk to the left of the beach. The water was quite rough when we there, but if you want to go swimming head to the left part of the beach. There is ample parking, right next to the beach. There are 2 beach bars that both serve drinks and small snacks
Waves can be high at times, see some fabulous kite surfing here and if you find it a bit rough, walk to the far left side around the crescent shaped beach. The sea wall offers some protection in this area, the calm water is clear and good for snorkelling. There is a small snack bar and washroom facilities close by.
Visited this beach while driving around the island. Not really much to see or do, but there is a small cafe/bar on the beach. The water was very rough here and not for weak swimmers. Most people were in the waves to ride them.
My kids loved this beach. Its not a crowded beach like the ones on the west side tend to get. You will have an occasional bus load of cruise ship travelers but for the most part not many people make the venture to the southeast end. Out of the 10 days we were on the island we hit this beach about 7 times. You can rent chairs from Tibby's but they only have 6 or 8. If the cruise ship buses get there early you will be out of luck. The beach is a crescent shape with a cool rocky ledge on the northeast side. If you are careful you can walk to the other bay. We had a great trade wind coming in from the east so the waves rolled in nicely. If you are there with small children, walk to the northeast where its protected and the waves are virtually non existent. I would put this beach on my top ten for the island.
A truly beautiful beach, the views from above on the approach road are also stunning. Quite hard to find, you need a map. Lovely crescent bay, never crowded. Lots of places to find shade in the mangroves edging the sand. The snorkelling can be good but it’s a bit hit and miss, you need to go up the far end really and the water can often be choppy. The bit in front of the parking area has always been wavey on the 5 times I’ve been. It’s also worth walking round the point for some spectacular experience of the rough Atlantic crashing against the rocks.
I'm sure this area could be much more beautiful than it is. The water in the bay is so pretty and warm, but the sea grass.....ugh the sea grass. It was literally almost 18 inches thick in some areas of the beach. We had hoped to snorkel here because it's supposed to be a great place for that. Once we saw the wall of sea grass on the beach we didnt even consider spending any length of time here. If someday they get back to tending to the beach here, removing all that grass, I know we would return to spend time and snorkel.
Half moon bay is world class in most respects.Tibby is running a great family food shack by the beech and serves great fresh food at very reasonable cost each day. Drinks are good and the run is always free flowing. Years ago I was lucky enough to get to know smiling Harry. One day he out a large bottle of rum on my table and a small bottle of coke and said " help yourself to the rum but please go easy on the coke as I'm running low"... What a classic and what a great man. Tibby is clearly a similar soak , her food is cooked with love and that ethis is clear in everything she and her staff do. Because of this little business half moon is a greater place to visit. We highly recommend both half moon bay and Tibby's place.
