great day out just be aware of road a bit tricky drive slowly and well worth trip, take a picnic and go early maybe to enjoy the beaches and snorkoling
Away from the reality, its hard to get there, but once you arrived ..... feels like you find the treasure...
The road to Lighthouse Beach is not for the faint of heart. You must have 4WD, but a jeep would be even better. We arrived and thought it was very nice, but didn't really understand why it was raved about. Then we realized we were at Lighthouse Bay, and had to drive a little farther to get to Lighthouse Beach, which was stunning, and almost empty (in February). Make sure to climb up on the hills and look out over both sides of the peninsula. Breath-taking! Certainly the most beautiful beach I have ever visited.
Truly one of the most beautiful beaches. We went in February and had a fantastic time. Almost nobody else there. Walk to where the Atlantic and the Caribbean flow into each other. Beautiful rock formations, nice snorkling. Pristine sandy beach. Don't miss it.
Basically off the charts and literally Top 10 beach in the world. Sadly, it is threatened by development but the local community is rallying to keep it pristine.
There are NO tourists at this beach from jan-march and its a great time to go. During the summers however its packed for the first time in my lifetime, so now we go to cat island!
made the long drive and the beach was beautiful, but covered with trash. Very sad that the island does not do more to remove trash, which mostly seemed to wash up from the sea.
Absolutely worth the drive. If you're on Eleuthera, make the trip to Lighthouse. After reading other reviews, we were a bit worried about the conditions of the road, but we drove a 4x4 SUV and had no problems - just take your time. Lighthouse consists of three beaches, the Caribbean side, the Atlantic side, and the hidden beaches in the middle of the rock formations. The first that you come across by taking the main trail will be the south western beach on the Caribbean side - a beautiful, sprawling, white sand beach dotted with palm trees and crystal clear turquoise water. We could have spent an entire day at this beach alone! (Glad we didn't, as it just gets better and better..!) The drive from this spot to lighthouse point is the most difficult - right away you have to trek up a pretty steep sandy hill. We were able to make it, but if you don't have 4x4 with high clearance, park and walk the rest of the way. We hiked up to the lighthouse point where we had beautiful panoramic views of the Caribbean and Atlantic side of the point. We decided to keep hiking and found our way around the point and came across an inlet between two rock formation, creating a hidden little white sand beach with the most crystal clear turquoise water. We knew this was going to be our beach spot did the day! We brought a picnic lunch, some beer, and spent the day laying out and enjoying the serene setting. The rock formations make for such a unique setting - pictures don't even do it justice - you have to see if to believe it! If you hike down this far, keep going around the point and check out the water-carved caves. We had so much fun exploring the cliffs, caves and hidden beaches. Tips: don't wear flip flops. If you want to get the full experience and be able to explore the caves and hidden areas, wear shoes or some sort of athletic sandals, as the coral can be very sharp and slippery (we both wore our Keen sandals, which I highly recommend). Give yourself the entire day for this trip. I guarantee you'll be wishing you had more time to enjoy this gorgeous spot. Don't let the other reviews scare you off about the rough drive - it is absolutely worth every bump along the drive. A few other reviews mentioned avoiding this beach due to the rough ride, Eleuthera has plenty of other beautiful beaches. I agree that Eleuthera does has many other beautiful beaches, but I promise you, none compare to this one. We didn't see another person the entire day! Truly one of the best and most unique beaches in the Caribbean.
Getting there is very difficult, have to have 4x4 or high clearance vehicle and even then i had my doubts at times! Road to turn on is not marked, followed Eleuthera.com directions and found it. Well worth the trip!!! Low tide is the best time to visit. Bring bug spray, water to drink( we bought a gallon at grocery store) food etc. The last grocery store is in Rock Sound with a gas station and hardware store. We are very happy that we visited this area.
It takes a bit of a drive, in a so-so road, but worth it! I would not dare doing the drive without a high clearance vehicle -SUV for example- but 4wd not really necessary. Once you get there go to both side Caribbean and Atlantic. The Caribbean is much nicer with high tide or at sunset, so stop by earlier on your way there and again on the way back from the Atlantic beach. The Atlantic is bigger and it has some fun path to climb up, from where you can see both oceans and both beaches. The Lighthouse itself is not a big deal, but it is up there where the rest of the great viewpoints are. Take a picnic and plan to spend the whole day there- you won't regret it. Most people leave earlier- if you see any- so at one point the beach will be all your :)
The road to get to Lighthouse Beach was about 4-5 miles and took us about 15min due to rough road. To me getting there is all part of the journey & once we got there we snorkeled & walked up to the Lighthouse. I hope they perserve the Lighthouse as it needs help. The Limestones against the sea is beautiful & makes the scenery extra special. Next time we will bring more food & drink as there is nothing here to purchase. An adventurous day with our two kids, hoping they will hold those memories as tight to their hearts as I do.
It is hard to get there. The road is beyond awful but once you are there it is amazing. The beach is pristine and the rock formations are incredible. I am so sorry that there are dune buggy tours to ruin this wonderful spot. I wish they would respect this unique spot.
We recently did a dune buggy tour out to the light house and beach stopping at an old church and bird habitat. This was a good way to see the sights as we were in port from a cruise ship and time is limited. We were then provided with a buffet lunch by princess cruises. Awesome.
Go very early and stay all day. Wear bugspray!! Take water and snacks and enjoy every second. Favorite part of island ... but make time to stop by double bay beach (Atlantic side) and then papaw beach (sanddollars everywhere on the bottom) off papaw road in palmetto point.
Would love to go back on a sunny day when there were no young people blasting music! It was only two people but they ruined it for us. Remember when they say there are no stores on the way there are no stores!! You have to bring food and water. It is also tricky to find but keep asking questions. Buy food in Rock Sound. We planned to buy food there but the store was closed so watch out for the hours of operation. The grocery store in Rock Sound is more like home.
