shirley's steam bath & massage

My boyfriend and I took a spur of the moment trip to JA, and coencidentally ended up staying at a lovely Villa (RockSide Villa in Great Bay.. check it out!!!) not too far from Shirley's. The plan was to rest, relax, and rejuvinate ourselves so much lazing around and sipping Red Stripes on the beach was the most I had planned. While looking at information on the Treasure Beach area I stumbled upon Shirley's steambath. As a certified lover of all things heat and massage related I knew we had to take advantage of our time in JA to make a trip for a steambath/massage. Shirley's driver, Doreen who picked us up from our villa was awesome making our short trip to the facility a fun one, and the property was beautiful! As a note, the ride was included in the total price for the massages which was a bonus! We were greeted by her sweet dogs upon our arrival, given cold bottled water to hydrate ourselves and then it was time to get to business. My boyfriend, who was suffering from a horribly timed vacation cold, was first to go under the treatment of Shirley's healing hands. He said that after his steam all of the congestion from his head drained and he felt pretty darn great. He also made mention that Shirley really focused on two of his trouble areas during the massage. Which was pretty intersting given he hadn't told her anything about his ongoing shoulder or achilles issues...hmmmm....While he was getting his steam/massage I hung out on the hill and chatted with Doreen and Nicholas (the gentleman that was helping get the water for the steam baths ready to go). I also played with one of the dogs, who was a total sweetheart. Wandering through the gardens I had the pleasure of seeing a beautiful Doctor Bird (national bird of the island) land on a branch, but dart away before i had time to get my camera out to capture the moment. I also went to the street to take pictures of the front of Shirley's property, which was beautiful all on it's own, but was quickly ushered back into the garden by her dog who was clearly more concerned with my well-being on the narrow streets than i had the good sense to be.Now it was time for me to steam! The steam bath itself was awesome (but i do have an odd fondness for sitting in steam)!!!!! And the massage that followed was equally as awesome! Both my boyfriend and I left feeling totally relaxed, yet oddly energized. We actually wanted to go back just partake in the steambath again, but didn't have the time before we had to leave. We will be back. Please take the time to visit Shirley! She's really an amazing woman, with an amazing gift (some may even say she's a healer, which I would agree with!). Our afternoon with her was a very special treat and I would actually be willing to take the 2.5 (or longer.. depending on your driver) trip from MoBay just to come spend an hour with Shirley and her healing hands.

There really are no words to describe this experience. Shirley is one of the most interesting and unique people I have ever met- second to my grandmother (who Shirley reminds me of :). I read the review that said to go see her at the beginning of your stay and we did just that. Shirley will detox the city and the stress right out of you and give your soul a good talking to. Go see her- you'll feel like you're on the travel channel visiting some exotic far removed part of the world.

I was a border at Viking Genus' House and we stopped by to pay a visit to Shirley one day. Although not having a massage, I did have a most enlightening conversation with Shirley. Her knowing of things impressed me greatly and do plan on stopping by next year.

This experience was amazing! When we drove up, Shirley greeted us with a cold bottle of water. The spa is in a small, stone building on her property surrounded by natural vegetation, herbs, flowers, and goats. A serene setting! As you approach the building, you begin to smell all of the herbs...lemongrass is dryjng outside and the boiling water with lemongrass, ginger, pimento is being prepared. The smell is intoxicating. Inside, the walls are natural stone with clean white linens. The steam bath and sweat was cleansing and relaxing followed by a deep massage. Forget the resort spas...visit Shirley for a unique, personal experience you won't forget!

It was wonderful, I've never had such a fantastic massage in my entire life. Especially stirring her herb pot made my sinus' open and really made me detoxify before and after the massage! It lasted the full hour and she was very welcoming. Shirley just had to look at me to recommend the specific herbs for me before asking me questions that pretained to my specific needs and wants. We have been going to Treasure Beach for 5 years now and visit Shirley EVERY time!! The steam bath with the herbs (lemongrass, ginger etc.) is an experience you will love! After your 15 min steam- Shirley gets you on her massage table. Shirley is the tiniest thing but don't let that fool you - she is super strong!! She give you a great detox massage that finishes the job your steam bath started. I always feel lighter and fresh after one of her treatments. Do not miss a chance to see Shirley!

Shirley sent a driver for us who also helped haul the hot pot of water and herbs for the detox steam. The setting is in a pagoda of sorts on her beautiful property. The steam/massage area is private and clean - the towels were fluffy and reeked of sunshine - glorious! The detox was incredibly unique and I lost track of time - was NOT too hot for this Finnish girl! The massage was unlike any I've ever had - her approach to bodywork is a combination of what you need and how she feels like delivering it. She was incredibly attentive and made sure I was comfortable. Shirley is a dynamic and lovely soul who has many gifts to share with those open to receiving her wisdom. I will remember the experience forever and hope to return.

I had contacted Shirley prior to my month long visit to Jamaica during July early August hoping that I might get to have a treatment at the beginning part of my visit there and again at the end. Thanks to Trip Advisor for the contact! She replied to my e-mail the same day and then when I was ready to make an appointment at the tail end of my visit late July, I must say I am so thrilled with the unique experience she provided! As the other reviewers stated, she is very professional about what she does. It is truly a wonderful experience where the herbs she grows, harvests and prepares a concoction of lemongrass, eucalyptus leaves, ginger and various other herbs or plants are steeped in a large amount of boiling water to emit vapors meant to destress, purify and ultimately release tension. A ladle was given so that I could stir and release the herbal steam in the small closet where I sat disrobed with a curtain covering the small enclosure. I regularly have a steam bath and go to hot springs here in Colorado so I am very familiar with detoxying this way. The structure where she provides this splendid treatment is on her property where she resides. All is kept very neat and clean, drinking water provided and attention to any personal needs also discussed. Shirley was pleased when I told her I am Native American and have experienced many sweats conducted in the native tradition. After the steam, I went to the massage table right outside the steam closet for a very thorough massage. She is very much intuned to body work so she knew where to work on my body using deep tissue strokes. I was so relaxed, I fell asleep after carrying on a dialogue about various topics! After the massage I walked through her garden where she is growing many beautiful plants and flowers. I prepared a small flower arrangement for her home and then we sat and chatted a bit until a rainstorm approached and it was time to leave. She is a terrific person in addition to being superior at her work. I did inquire if she offered any other services, which she didn't, but her neighbor next door has a little salon and could have provided that if I had wanted. If you want to experience more than just resort style spa services, and want to work with someone who goes way beyond just a beauty treatment into an actual healing experience , she is someone I'd say to do this. Her price is comparable to massage only fees so having the unique steam/sweat thrown in is an extra plus!

I have been to visit Shirley the last 3 times I have been in the area. The steam bath is wonderful and Shirley grows her own herbs for the steam bath. When you arrive she shows you around the place and provides clean towels and bottled water. Step into the steam box and be prepared to come out feeling like a new person. Finish off with the best massage you will ever have. I have had a few and she by far exceeds any other! Her place is so nice and peaceful. Great views of the area and sea. She can send a driver to pick you up if needed. This is one stop I always make. If time allows, get a steam and massage when you arrive and another before you go home. Shirley is wonderful.

My husband and I both joined Shirley last week for an incredible day. The steam bath was incredible and felt so purifying. The massage was great and Shirley could not have been a better hostess. We both would highly recommend the entire experience and we will be back to visit her on our next trip.
