Great little hike to the viewing platform. Amazing views and interesting theories on the Canyon. Loved the whole trip.
We have visited Ouimet Canyon many times over the years and always find it to be absolutely spectacular! It is about 15 km. off Highway 17 and approximately an hour east of the City of Thunder Bay and is well worth the visit. When I first visited, years ago, there were no safety fences, constructed scenic lookout or bathroom facilities. Safety and convenience have been significantly upgraded for the casual visitor since then. Don't miss this site. Plan on a 1-2 hour visit.
what a Beatuiful place. Amazing canyon walls but this is a dry Canyon mostly unless water runs through it when the snow melts or water is underground. The walk is not steep and very easy for everyone with 2 viewing platforms. They do have fences on them. A twonee or any donation is accepted. no Camping just a day use area. It does echo too. There is a unique rock too. Enjoy this canyon. It's a must see. Worth the drive from Thunder Bay. eagle canyon is Beatuiful but costs 20 each to do the 2 bridges close to this canyon but it's before this one but there Zipline is pricy. I didn't do it but it's another option too. You can just do the 2 bridges too. One short one and one very long one. Eagle canyon has water.
The Superior Circle Tour calls Ouimet Canyon the "grand canyon" of the north, or some such thing....well....it is! Maybe not as deep as the Grand Canyon, not quite as colorful, but totally unexpected, and very dramatic. It's about 10 miles off the highway, but not hard to find, and well worth a visit. The basalt cliffs open up, there is a gash in the earth, and you stand on the rim looking down, a long ways down. I was there during fall colors, on a gorgeous day with blue skies, and only one other car in the parking lot. It was amazing!
As you travel the north shore of Superior, you have to be saddened by the lack of people stopping at the exquisite natural beauties on the way. Fine, everybody is busy; but surely not too busy to take a detour and see this natural wonder, a canyon that overlooks the lake.I have been to Ouimet Canyon three times over the years and each time the amenities are better - and the view just as good. Now there are good trails through the bush, well marked and one is accessible to wheelchairs. it costs a paltry toonie to visit; and that has to be Canada's best travel bargain.
Ouimet canyon has some of the most spectacular views I have ever seen. The canyon is just amazing to look at. There are two overview areas for the canyon - be sure to see them both. One interesting item: the interpretive display incorrectly measured the depth of the canyon at 1000 km - that would be one deep canyon. It needs to be corrected to say 1000 meters or 1 km.
We did a quick stop here on a circle tour and we were so glad we did! It is a bit of a hike to get here off the highway but so worth it. It is a nice walk to the viewing platforms, not hard at all, and truly only about half an hour total. Once you get to the viewing platforms you are truly stunned at the canyon that awaits you - you would have no idea! Definitely take the time if you are in the area - was unlike anything else that we saw on the circle tour.
This little gem is about 10 km off the highway. It is by donation with a suggested donation of $2 per person. There is a great short hike to two viewing platforms with spectacular views of the canyon. Bathrooms are also available. An awesome stop for families, people travelling with pets or anyone who just wants to stretch their legs and enjoy some natural beauty.
We picked this park for a walk to stretch our legs in the midst of a long drive. It was a little further off the highway than we realized (ten kilometers), but well worth it in my opinion. On the way up to the park, we saw a mama bear and her cub crossing the road. At the canyon, we enjoyed the short hike with a bridge to cross and two different platforms to view the canyon from. The interpretive plaques at the platforms also helped us to learn a little bit about the canyon. I was glad we opted to stop here.
If you have the time you must see this. It is so beautiful the view. You walk to two different platforms and see the beauty of this. Take your time and enjoy this. They do have a small gift shop too. This is not handicap accessible. Lots of stairs.
Must see place. Together with Sleeping Giant PP and Neys PP shows how beautiful this area of Canada is. Very easy short walk to viewing platforms allow close view of canyon's walls. Great view.
I never knew this place existed until we decided to do a road trip from Kingston ON to Winnipeg MB stopping at various attractions along the way. It was gorgeous. We are lucky to live in a country with such wonders of nature. Take your time and explore the canyon. It's worth the trip.
If you have a day on your trip to Thunder Bay take the time to visit Ouimet Canyon. The flora and birds are always changing so any time of the year is good. The bottom of the canyon offers a complete diffrent ecosystem than the lip. The association that takes care of the canyon have constructed boardwalks around the rim that offer gorgeous vistas. Donations are accept no entrance fee.
One of the nicest places I've ever visited. Absolutely worth the travel. Staff, on the contrary to Eagle Canyon, is very friendly and helpful.Looking forward to visiting it again in the future!
A short drive off of the Trans Canada highway but well worth it, This was my favorite stop on the circle tour. Besides the hike in the park to the canyon and the gorgeous view we also followed the tourist signs to Canada's longest zip line and longest suspension bridge. Yes it was expensive but good fun!
