Lots of historical stuff if you are into that. Kids got to dress up in old clothes which was fun for them. Worth the entrance fee.
The Murney tower is an impressive small fortification built to defend Kingston from attack in the 1800s. It has a great location on the shore of Lake Ontario with free parking right beside the tower and a nearby park for a picnic lunch if weather permits.
We had an excellent tour of Murney Tower and found the history fascinating. To top is off there is a Geocache inside! It's small but worth the visit
Very nice waterfront location (worth walking around in the park outside, absolutely beautiful). Cheap parking close-by. The museum itself doesn't have a lot of content but it definitely contains interesting items. I found that a lot of the items/rooms were not explained (at all or with enough details) but fortunately, the staff was nice enough to answer all the questions I gathered. Another downside is that the museum itself is very small, you could probably read absolutely everything and be out within 30-60 minutes. Definitely not wheelchair/baby carriage accessible.
What a nice visit this was. Especially on a beautiful summer afternoon, with a nice breeze by the lake, it is nice to walk around the site before entering it, a way to appreciate the architecture, which is inspired by Corsican defense posts that had proved to be impossible to destroy. Unusual organic forms that emerge from the core, like claws anchored in the earth...The interior is quite surprising and full of objects of the past, information, aretefacts. Go upstairs and see and feel how it must have been for those operating the cannon, which is still there. Then, when you think your visit is done, do go downstairs and see where and how those who were stationed there actually lived, with their families. Even the old bath tub is there, not quite like the one you have at home. This is an excellent site for old and young ones, some will remember while others will discover. After the visit of the tower, stroll around in the park by the lake, take a pic-nic, there are benches and it's all looking to the south! I highly recommend the Murney Tower.
Located on the waterfront with ample room for parking, this is one of four Martello towers built in the mid 1840s to defend the Kingston harbor. The tower now is a museum with exhibits on the main floor, a cannon and related items on the second floor, and a few items in the very cool basement. Whether you just want to get out of the hot sun or get a view of garrison life in the 19th century, this is a very inexpensive one hour visit.
We have these towers in England but have never been in side one. This is a small place to visit but has some very interesting history of Canada and the use of the towers. The staff were great and have a great deal of knowledge, enjoyed the visit.
It may be small in comparrison to Fort Henry but it gives you an eye into yhe past and shows the level that Canada was willing to go to protect itself frim invasion from the USA. An all to real possibility at tbat time. Look through the gun ports into the moat and picture the attack. Stand at the cannon port holes and picture an invading navy. Enjoy the visit and just imagine, what if?
Was built in 1846 to defend Kingston agains an attack. I visited this attraction in 2011 and revisited on November 2013.You have to call ahead of your visit to find out visiting hours
