Lock 8 Gateway Park in Port Colborne is a real nice place to spend an hour or so waiting or watching Great Lakes Ships move through one of the longest locks in the world (0.42 km long)There is a raised viewing area but unfortunately if you want to take photos this is NOT the best place.Instead walk 100 metres north to where the highway crosses the drawbridge, walk down a rugged grassy slope and you can get fantastic shots of ships entering or exiting the canal.Gateway park has lots of parking so it is a good place to leave your vehicle if you are biking along the Greater Niagara Circle Tour. There are clean, open washrooms with water available and in summer lots of flower gardens. For nice lunch or breakfast we highly recommend Melina's family restaurant at 215 Main Street, a 5 minute walk from the park and in the opposite direction of the bridge (west)
Lock 8 park is on the "island" and gets its name from being next to and facing Welland Canal's Lock # 8. The Friendship Trail goes through the park so there are always walkers, joggers, cyclists and inline skaters on the winding trail. A beautiful walk up with flower planters and fountain leads to a viewing platform so that visitors can stand just above the height of a ship in the lock. There are public washrooms, a small pavilioin with firepit for summer barbecues and picnics, lots of space for kids to playNEW in 2013 - the Algoport Skateboard and BMX park! It's finally finished with the offical opening on May 8, 2013. Port Colborne finally has a place for youth to hang out in the summer!
This is right beside the Welland Canal, so you might get to watch an ocean liner going by. There is a nice covered picnic area, swings & other kids stuff in the play area & a very nice skate board/bmx bike pad.

neat place to watch the ships come in. stop at the visitor center. they were very helpful. directed us on what to do with the time we had. we visited the marina, watched some wakeboarders. we also visited downtown. would have liked to visited nickel beach but ran out of time. good place to spend an afternoon.
