We loved it there ,tour lady was very good and friendly ,will go again sometime and take friends back as its good to take in what happened in the past year's.
The fort was destroyed during the war of 1812, only the powder house is original, the fort was rebuilt as a historic site. Visit when the reinactors are in place. You can visit many of the buildings. The common soldiers barracks is interesting, Some families were housed there, with only curtains separating the family quarters. You can climb the parapets and see across to Fort Niagara, American fort, apparently when war was declared the American officers were having dinner at Fort George, they were allowed to return back to their fort. A few years ago, my wife and I went on a ghost walk through the fort at night, we didn't see any ghosts. Very interesting and educational.
The family and I blended in as true Canadians (shhh, we're Americans) complete with maple leaf flags in hand to watch reenactments of battles past, cannon fire, period costumes, and fireworks. Such a fun and friendly crowd, a memory we will never forget!
The every dimension of pioneer/fort life is richly detailed here. The summer students, paid staff and volunteers (there are a lot!) contribute to making this an experience for grown-ups AND the kids. Pick a re-enactment weekend, with fife and drum parades, gun firing and re-enactors who REALLY know their stuff. This is one of the best historical Parks that Parks Canada has. And the rest of the Town is very good too.
This was a fun little day trip while we stayed in the area. It was neat to imagine what life was like in the day of a solider. It made me appreciate being a free canadian.
Be sure to take the tour. The guides are terrific! Make sure you get your parking fee refunded when you buy tour tickets
It was a pleasant way to the spend the afternoon. We enjoyed the piece of history and could almost feel the lives of people from the past.I would say that if I had brought my children, they may have been a bit bored but it was lovely for adults.
restored British fort right across the Niagara river from the U.S. A lot of history here. Good exhibits and enthusiastic volunteer staff. Outside of Niagara on the Lake and on a small hill above the river. Looks and feels very much the way I expect it did back in 1812. Worth a visit if you enjoy history and are in the area.
I've been here many times and always discover something new. The great staff are always friendly and happy to share tidbits of information with you if you have time to talk to them. This site is mostly a recreation. Non-the-less it gives you a great feel for what life would have been like for soldiers in the early nineteenth century. Certainly a must-see.
This was a very beautiful location on the water - it is well kept and very interesting and informative. It is easy to do a self guided tour.
We enjoyed the docent doing the tour and liked the fellow giving the demonstration of the musket. Both were well informed and engaging.
A well conserved piece of Canadian history that captivates the era well and imaginatively. On entering, you are greeted at the gates by a lady in period dress and given directions. A demonstration on using a musket is part of the tour which is very well presented. The fort has interesting buildings that give a flavour of what the soldiers lives were about on a day to day basis. The guided tour is very informative indeed. A very worth while visit indeed!
I remember coming here on a school trip a long time ago and maybe my attention span is better (which I don't think it is) but I enjoyed the experience so much more this time. The guided tour was fun and interesting with just enough history to keep you interested but not enough to put you to sleep. We enjoyed the musket firing demonstration as well. Surprisingly the big gem was visiting the cookhouse behind the officer's quarters. The chef there was so lively and full of information about what it was like to cook at the time the fort was in use. Maybe they're catering to their foodie crowd or just loves his job, but easily could have had a 30-45 minute presentation of his own...he even had cookies!
We enjoyed the costumed pipers who lent atmosphere to this reconstructed 18th Century British Fort. Interesting buildings and history and worth a short detour from the nearby highway. We were favorably impressed by the musket demonstration by a costumed soldier who knew his musket drill well.
Had a great time at Fort George learning about the history of the Fort and Niagara on the Lake. Loved the musket shooting and drummers. Great place to take kids they have lots of room to run around. Loved the period costumes and the tours.
