We went on the river with Fraser twice. He is a very knowledgeable guide who cares deeply about the bears and the environment. As photographers he tries to accommodate the best angle for your picture but absolutely will not put bear or client safety at risk just for a better shot. I respected him even more for taking that stand. The river tour is peaceful, and beautiful and exciting all at the same time. I would highly recommend Kynoch Adventures...they are the best in my books.
Thank you Fraser! These guys and gals were just great.Very good rates and professional all the way.Super helpful and friendlyExtremely knowledgable about the river and the bearsVery safety oriented for both passengers and bears too.
The float starts 35 minutes up the road at Belargo Bear Watching Platform (see our entry under Tweedsmuir Park). Regardless of whether you hire your own boat or not, you all travel up together. On the river you then join up with boats from Tweedsmuir Lodge. The boat / raft is stable and comfortableWe heard Fraser talking a lot on his boat, we were pleased to have a quieter guide. Our guide was a young water sports instructor from England, this appeared an odd decision to not employ a local from the Nuwalk Nation. We met a man from the Nation on the Belargo Bear Platform who hugely added to our experience here, which a young (albeit pleasant) dude from Shropshire could simply not compete with. That said the drift (in sunny weather) was stunningly beautiful. We saw 8 bears and had a very mellow yet exciting time.We were pleased that we booked this trip. We were also pleased that we only booked one trip and spent the rest of the time on the Belargo Bear Watching Platform. However the platform closes 30th September; if you come later then more river float trips might be a good idea.
We had a great time on our Grizzly tour - it is such a nice, quiet way to float down the river in the beautiful Bella Coola Valley. We were very lucky to see a grizzly, what an opportunity to take pictures of these amazing animals! Thanks for a great trip!
Wanted to give Frasier and his crew a big long overdue thank you for showing my 4 year old daughter her first Grizzly and Cubs. Knyoch Adventure will show you a very intimate side to the Grizzly Bear as you float down the river in one of the most beautiful surroundings. What more could ask for guides with great personalities, close-up of Bears fishing, Eagles, and the peaceful background of the Mountains. Did I mention the cutest Grizzly cub I ever photographed.
When organising our trip to Canada, one of the things we really wanted to do was see grizzly bears in the wild, and Kynoch adventures made that possible. We booked two tours with them, a boat trip down the river and a walking tour. First we went for the boat trip with Jim. We didn't really know what to expect but were absolutely stunned to see bears, despite that being the point of the tour! The first one we saw was quite close, and we carried on by so as not to disturb him. Then we saw one further up the river on a log jam and later, some fishing for salmon in the river. We also saw some black bears. Jim was very respectful of them, and of course we had to make sure that we weren't approaching them and disturbing them. The surroundings were so quiet and peaceful, it was beautiful. We also saw several bald eagles flying overhead. There were snacks included on the tour too. It was an amazing experience. My husband was so enthralled that went back for another tour the next day with Fraser. The second trip was a walking tour with Jeff Bray, who runs the Great Bear Chalet. Jeff took us out for a walk through the wilderness surrounding his chalet to see if we could see some bears, and we learnt so much along the way. Jeff is a fascinating guy and so knowledgeable. We saw a mother bear and two cubs a way along the river, and we stopped a while. They weren't very keen to come close to us understandably so we just waited for them to leave. Jeff also took us to his chalet and we were lucky enough to see bears from his deck. Just amazing. I can't recommend it highly enough. Bella Coola is a very special place, and all the guys who run these tours know that and want to show it, as well as preserving its natural beauty. It's definitely something I'll never forget.
It's all in thier nature. Fraser and Holly are appear to be doing exactly what they should be doing at this point in thier lives. Delivering your eyes to the wonders of the Bella Coola Valley safely and affordably. My only complaint is that there is never enough time in a day to absorb all they know.Geoff
My wife & I went on some trips with Kynoch Adventures while staying in the Bella Coola valley in September 2011. Kynoch arranged for us to take a half day hike with Jeff Bray accompanied by his friendly dog Bindy. We met Jeff at his lodge (Great Bear Chalet, check out the website) and had a great morning hiking around various spots along the river looking for bears. Jeff delivered us a great viewing through the trees of a lone grizzly bear fishing for salmon in the river below us. We watched for a while as the bear wandered up river and out of sight around the next bend - it was a very exhilirating experience. Kynoch operate out of Bella Coola Mountain Lodge in Hagesborg and are run by Fraser & Holly who also run the lodge. Fraser and his dad Las (spelling?) took us on two bear drifts down the Atnarko River in inflatable rafts. We saw bears on each trip both grizzly & black. Scenery is also spectacular and the raft is fitted with comfortable seating with snacks & hot tea served along the route. Fraser & Las were both very entertaining and happy to share stories of their extensive world travels and life in the BC valley. We really enjoyed both trips - a real highlight of our Canadian tour. Highly recommended.
