A glimpse of the penal system and life in Trois Rivieres from the early construction of the jail to its retirement in the 1900's.

A visit to this prison with all the explanations brought by a guide who was a previous inmate will change you view and understanding of the prison system that was in place in Trois-Rivières and very much active until very recently until the place was close dwn following a report from an international organization related to the United Nation, I believe. Fee is very small @ $5.No weelchair or lift available. Not recommended for people with a problem with claustrophobia.

Had a great tour of this old prison. Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I chose the English tour over the French. There is really only 1 English tour listed on the website and when I went to go on it I was told the guide was ill and that the tour would be the next day. I came the next day and had to wait a while as the tour guide was running late. I read that the tour is conducted by ex prisoners, but I believe that is the case only for the French tours. In any case, the English tour was very interesting and the prison has been kept mostly in it's original state. well worth the visit of this old prison.

We enjoyed the visit especially that an old inmate was the guide. Do not miss this visit if you stop in 3-Rivieres

Highly recommended tour but not for the overly sensitive as the prison had conditions that were appallingly cruel for inmates incarcerated here. Shamefully this was the case until the prison closed in 1986! At the end of the tour, Bill, our English speaking excon guide, left us with a positive inspirational message much needed after vividly recounting the misery of life in this prison.

Fairly interesting place; however I have to admit that without our tour guide, this visit might have been a much more plain one. The English-speaking guide - Bill - is supposedly a former prisoner himself. He breathed life in this tour with his showmanship, anecdotes, attitude, lively and witty banter, and re-telling of his personal prison experiences. Caution - don't know what our impressions would have been with a less talented presenter. As it is - definitely worth a visit, and the price of admission is well within reason.Beware: if you need an English-speaking tour - make sure to call a few days ahead and request it.

This very interesting tour in an architectural, historical & cultural building which once served a a prison where murderers were hanged in the courtyard is conducted by real ex-cons ( one at a time). I visit this prison regularly and of course they all tell the same historical tale but each has his own vision of what life was like . This jail is part of a larger museum and is certainly worth a visit. Beware however! Not all ex-cons have a great command of English & tours are conducted in French . If the guide speaks English he will translate for you. Of interest is the women's cell, the "hole", the dentist's chair. Definitely worth seeing. Best of all. You can even spend the night there a few times a year. Also there are guided night tours during the summer. Remember, electricity wasn't always available, so a night visit in musty underground quarters can induce a weird sensation
