A fairly lengthy trip into the gorge, but once there was impressed with the area & of the colour of the water.
Easy and pretty walk with a good reward of amazing blue water at the end. Sandflies are hungry either keep moving or take repellent. From Hokitika allow 1.5 hours round trip minimum (driving and walking) and you should be right.
Interesting drive through farmland to gorge, stopped at Kowhitirangi memorial.NZ history worth catching up on.
The road out to the gorge is a 30 minute drive from Hokitika. It is very rural but well signposted. There is small car park and an overspill a bit further from the track. The walk to the gorge is like a bush trail, with various look-out points where you can see the river below. The bridge spanning the river is a narrow swing bridge, and it really sways as you walk along it. Only 6 people should on the bridge at one time, but folk were ignoring this when we were there. They looked like a tour group and I wish that tour leaders would point out the dangers of ignoring this basic bit of common-sense.The gorge itself is lovely and wild, with large rocks or boulders to clamber on to get a better view. You are OK doing this by the way, there are well-made steps and handrails leading you down to the rocks area. Allow at least 30 minutes to do the walk and see the gorge, plus an hour to drive the round trip. It is a great way to spend the morning and highly recommended.
After hearing alot about how beautiful the Hokitika Gorge was, i couldnt wait to check it out for myself. The drive to yhe Gorge passes through farmland winds up at a forest. We went early in the morning to avoid the rush in the afternoon. There was nobody around and after a short 10 minute walk through the lush green forest we saw the beautiful blue waters of the gorge. It was amazing! The suspension bridge over the gorge gives you the best views of the water and if you cross over the bridge you can climb up some boulders and take that perfect photo. It was definately one of my favourite places on my road trip!
Only a short easy 5 minute walk tracks well maintained the water a magical blue. Definitely worth the drive out of town for a visit
An easy walk, the upgraded track has been sensitively done sinca our last visit. A great spot to have a picnic. The colour of the water never ceases to amaze us.
Fortunately I live in Hoki and it's great to have this just behind us by the mountains. Always so blue and well worth the drive through the country side to get to.
Gorgeous blue water, a place not to be missed and easy to nip to en route. The Gorge walk is about 5 mins down and accessible for most with a steady incline but good path. If you're not feeling active you can see plenty from near the top too.
A short drive from Hokitika to the gorge and a beautiful easy walk to the swingbridge and gorge.Photografic place. Watch out for sandflies, take your repellent !
absolutely breath taking views BUT insect repellent and long sleeves a must! the bugs are everywhere!
Well worth the quick trip out from town. A very quiet and tranquil place early in the morning before the tourist buses arrive.
Out of all the places we visited on a brief trip to the West coast this place will remain in our memories longer than anything else...There's plenty of gorges around the world but few that have water that's so turquoise it as though its been specially coloured to attract visitors. It's worth remembering some insect repellent as the sandflies like the gorge as its tasty visitors!
About a half hour outside of Hokitika. Once you are in the car park about a 15 minute walk to the gorge and suspension bridge. Yes, it sways! Bugs too! Bring spray.
Would definitely take the time to take this walk. See the rain forest, blue glacial waters, rocks. Well laid out, wildlife wandering nearby. Be cautious when walking as some drop offs are steep. Do this instead of paying for a treetop walk... You will see more beauty and wildlife here.
