Great walk down to the cove. However to see it at its absolute best check the tides. Take water. Worth while trek
Highly recommend the walk to Cathedral Cove but remember your sun screen and take some water as there is no cafe until back in Hahei
This is a beautiful beach, with an iconic arch. You can take a tramp to the beach, it is shortish but up and down hike. I saw plenty of younger people huffing and puffing up the hills. You can also take the water taxi from Hahei beach, $15 each way. You can walk one way and take the water taxi back. Worth the trip either way. Not wheel chair accessible that I could tell.
It was about a 30 minute walk/hike down to the beach which was well worth it. The water is so blue and the cove makes for an amazing view. We lounged around on the beach the whole day and saw many people get drenched by the tide coming in which was the only thing we had to watch out for. It was a sunny day so there was a lot of people but I think that's expected. Parking in the beginning was a pain so if possible I recommend going early in the morning because by noon it gets pretty busy.
Make sure you have time to enjoy the walk from Hahai then you can reward yourself by relaxing on the beach. Use your imagination and be transported to the scene in the film Prince Caspian as you walk through the arch. You can even take a water taxi back if you don't want to walk.
Couldn't find a car park anywhere near this cove, missed being able to walk down to see the attraction
Was well worth the hike in, the start from HaHei beach can be a bit hard to find. We packed a picnic lunch and sat and enjoyed the great views. There are bathroom facilities on site but no food. I would recommend going early before it gets too crowded. Nice to get a picture without hundreds of people in th picture. Would not recommend doing the walk in flip flops, would also take some water.
A lovely walk with an amazing beach at the end. Take a picnic & spend the day. Don't forget your camera.
Having checked out the carpark the day before we decided to get up early and hit the trail before most people got started. The carpark had only a few vehicles and people were just starting to wake so we headed off and came across only half a dozen or so people coming back. It was definitely worth the effort to get up and there before the crowds as we managed to get some time on the beach without others. It was a good walk there and back - not for push chairs, wheelchairs or bikes - some stairs. Winds through some native bush and there are some side tracks to other beaches.Pukekohe coffee is worth a stop when you get back to the carpark.
Cathedral Cove is a great geological formation 15-minute drive from Hot Water Beach and vice versa. It gets crowded there on the weekends, the summer and NZ holidays; parking can be difficult. The beach is beautiful and the water can be just as beautiful if the surf is calm, otherwise swimming may not be possible. No swimming guards are at the cove. First off, it is a good hike to the beach, up and down a dirt/rocky path that does open up a few times to some incredible vistas of the ocean and off shore islands. The park signs estimate it is a 45 minute hike to the cove from the car park, but you are moving fairly well to make that time. We had eleven of us, all levels of fitness; the hike was strenuous for some. The hike ends at a set of somewhat dirt/wood stairs. Once there the rock cave and two adjacent beaches are beautiful and well worth the hike. When you first arrive on the beach there is a small waterfall against the far cliff to your right as you face the ocean, many miss this and kids love playing under it. Depending upon the time of year varies the strength of the water falling. There is a bathroom at the cove but no other facilities. The water was calm enough during our visit that half our party swam out to big rocks and jumped off them for part of our stay. We visited numerous other beaches and many of our group believe that was the best swim they had during the trip. Note: there are other trails and Sting Ray cove which can be visited, but we did not stop at those.
This place is amazing and is a must. Prepare to hike some so wear comfy shoes. We loved this place. Bring a camera and make sure you watch out for the rising and unpredictable tide. Also don't forget to sit back and take in the scenery because it's one of a kind. There is also some short hikes off the main one so lots of things to explore . Bring plenty of water and sunblock . It can get hot and sunny. I would plan for at least 4 hours return . Great place. Try to catch the sunrise. It gets crowded around noon and parking spots are little to none. Not too far away from hot water beach
Its about a 30 mins walk from the car park - down, up, twist, turn and down again through indigenous bush to the beautiful sandy cove with wooded cliffs and of course the 'cathedral' - an arch through a limestone headland, carved by the sea over millennia and linking two fine beaches. When I was there the swimming was safe, but not patrolled. And of course, having enjoyed the destination you have another 30 mins walk to the car park again - up, turn, twist, down and up! There are variants of the path, leading through wooded groves or via intermediate bays if you feel up to it.But for the more faint-hearted there is a cheat's way to get to this popular cove - a 'water taxi' runs every 30 minutes-ish from Hahei Beach and back. The actual journey takes about 3 minutes - not bad@ $25 pp return!!!! But be warned - if there is the slightest swell coming onto the beach it can be quite tricky for the less agile to board the boat - my wife was lucky not to suffer serious injury when the gang-plank came down on her foot!
This beach is iconic New Zealand! It is a great beach with clean sand and clear blue seas and the famous "cathedral" hole in the rock. Do be prepared for a testing hike down to the beach and back again to the car park though.
beautiful view from carpark of electric blue sea and dotted islands, it seemed a long hot walk down to the cove but so much easier and quicker coming back, the cove is breathtaking, a beach like id never seen before, caves and sharp pointed rocks compliment eachother, the turquiose sea and white sand, a romantic spot for sure, not too many there concidering hear it gets pretty hectic, pack a lunch and make a day of it, you can go by boat but the walk is great meeting people into their 70s, carpark can fill quickly and some eager people walked from Hahei Beach! go when tide is out, we just flucked that and was able to walk thru the hole in the rock, the photos are good but dont show the full beauty, my teen and me 'high five'ed at the top as we threw ourselves on the lawn at the top in the hot searing sun, a day well spent
