I joined Adelaide's Haunted Horizons for a paranormal investigation tour at the Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village. Apparently this is one of the most haunted locations in South Australia with previous tour participants reporting everything from seeing solid shadowy figures to feeling as though they’d been touched to experiencing unexplained emotional changes including crying and anger. It was certainly a very creepy atmosphere. The night started with a tour of several different buildings, none of which have electricity connected. It was very dark due to the new moon and the use of torches was kept to a minimum while our tour guide Alison told stories about the history of each building and the suspected ghostly inhabitants. Then came the good stuff. Alison and her team of paranormal investigators told us about their firsthand experiences in the village and played video and audio of some pretty freaky occurrences. And then it was our turn to play with the super cool equipment including night vision goggles, electromagnetic frequency meters, simple energy detectors, ghost boxes and Ovilus (an electronic speech-synthesis device which utters words depending on environmental readings, including electromagnetic waves). It was a lot of fun asking the “ghosts” questions and listening to the ghost box to try and pick out intelligible answers. It was so much fun that we didn’t finish until 1:30am!Apparently my tour was very quiet compared to some and so unfortunately I don’t have any cool ghost stories to tell and my level of skepticism remains unchanged. But I was very impressed by Alison’s philosophy of always looking for the rational explanation first, as well as the fact that she doesn’t employ any cheap tricks or tacky gimmicks to spice up the tour. What you see is what you get. And even without a “real” ghost experience, the night was incredibly interesting and a lot of fun.
Really worthwhile this one. No cheap theatrics or anything like that which make some of the others suffer so badly. That kind of thing also makes you think if something did happen was it the tour guide. None of that kind of thing happens with these tours and investigations. For the investigations you're allowed to use the equipment, too, so it's not just standing around being spoken to. You are part of the experience as well. The team who do the tours are a great group of people and you can be guaranteed a good time and, perhaps, something interesting might happen. You have the option to pay to do just the ghost tour only or stay on and do the investigation side of things too.
My daughter had purchased a gift voucher for my birthday for the Tailem Town ghost tour which I used on Saturday 4th October. 5 of us joined the main group of about 20 for the 8pm tour. I don't want to give away too much but we all thoroughly enjoyed our night. It was very dark and creepy, exactly what we wanted. Tour guide was great and was thrilled to see photos on their Facebook page of our group. Stories were enthralling. Another great thing...we had dinner at the Riverbank hotel in Tailem bend and they offered 10-15% on meals and drinks. Glad we knew this early and made a booking as it was very busy. Was a great night and would love to go in the daytime and check out all the old farm stuff etc and stay on for a ghost hunt in the evening.
We have been on several tours with Haunted Horizons, including Old Tailem Town, Burra, Port Adelaide, Adelaide Dark History Tour, and Adelaide Arcade. The experiences have been simply amazing, the staff are just wonderful, and Alison has an uncanny knack of being able to bring the past to life with her stories of days gone by. And to be able to have the opportunity to use the 'ghost hunting' equipment used by paranormal investigators, was exciting to say the least. It goes beyond "seeing" a ghost...the whole experience is incredible. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Adelaide.
