The hike was challenging particularly from Lake Vera to Lake Tahune however the wilderness and views are spectacular so well worth the effort.

The walk in is exacting and challenging and you must be prepared for bad and wet weather. Wet weather gear and a tent essential. You need to be fit. Walk ing on your own not recommended. This is not cradle mountain....huts have a good amount of space and there is plenty of water. Check weather before you go. View from peak is superb. Great swimming in lake tahune.

Couldn't really see Frenchmans Cap from the highway with our weather but it is well worth a walk to it if you have a couple of days to spare (3-4 better) and like mud! One of the most impressive mountains in Australia (think Yosemite) and an easy climb once you make it there. Did I mention the 8 hours of walking through knee deep (or worse) mud to get to it? Perhaps not but new track works has made it easier and even with the mud, well worth the effort to get there. Two huts along the way help also. Prepare for it well and enjoy it - it is one of the best medium walks in Australia and everything from Barrons pass to FC is some of the best alpine scenery in Australia

I last climbed the Frenchman in 1983; the mountains and rivers are as beautiful as they were back then, but the bridges and the track - especially over the Loddon Plains - is very much improved - thank you Dick Smith! The two huts are in good condition, though Tahune Hut is small and showing its age. A magnificent series of peaks, and fantastic views from the summits on a good day. Well worth the effort. As old lags (50+) and with the short days in May we did it as a four day trip, which worked very well. Fitter, fleeter folk can do it in three days, and summer conditions are preferred if you can do it then.

Frenchmans Cap has to be one of Tasmania's best overnight trips. It isn't the easiest overnight walk, however the serenity, isolation and spectacular jagged peaks are simply amazing, and the view on a clear day as we had is the most rewarding thing I have experienced. The new track that diverts the Loddon Plains is good too. If Tasmanian walking appeals to you, and you don't want to pay the fee for the Overland Track, take a trek to Frenchmans Cap!

Picking just one place in Tazmania is tough-so many beautiful places. The 50km walk to Frenchmans cap is close to the top for me. As close as you are going to get to unspoilt wilderness-stunning. Take enough food for 8 days-the weather can change and you may have/want to stay longer. Highlight-being woken each morning by hairy possum arms under the flysheet looking for food!
