Given that is was mid summer I recognise that the place may not be buzzing with activity. But as it written up to be a place for great walks and hiking ( true0 we expect to see more signs of activity. There were only 2 choices for dinner ( 1 excellent and the other did not look very inviting). No shops were open and the place felt 'dead. We would not go out of our way again to visit the village.
We have just spent 4 wonderfull nights in this ski resort in the middle of summer. There are just the right number of services available to make the visit most interesting. The express ski lift to Eagles Nest Mountain Hut provides a vista of the village that is almost breathtaking. The 6.5 km walk to the "top" of Australia is a brisk and healthy walk. The view from there justifies the effort. Mt. Kosciuszko should be on everyone's bucket list.
If you plan to travel to Thredbo in summer for the amazing walks or mountain biking don't bother staying in the village. It is overpriced, nothing is open and petrol is literally double the price of the rest of the country. Stay at Jindabyne and drive in instead.
Thredbo is staging more and more "events", like the Blues Festival. The place is buzzing with people when this happens and anyone from people watchers to downhill mountain bike fanatics will have a great time
Brilliant day walk! Total 13km return to summit from ski-lift (6.5 each way) takes approx 4-6 hours. Easy pathway all the way to top (impossible? to get lost), standard shoes ok (no need for trekking boots). Need to take: warm top, water-proof jacket and sun-hat - we needed all. Despite clouds in Jindabyne/Thredbo it was clear weather at top (we were above the clouds). In summer there's just the one lift operating (called Express Quad Chair) - it's expensive! $34 p/person, operates from early (8:30am?) til 17:00pm. There's toilets near summit. You can buy snacks from supermarket in Thredbo which opens early. As always: take sufficient water, stay on the trails to avoid damaging delicate undergrowth and don't leave rubbish. We stayed in Jindabyne the night before - quick 30 min drive to Thredbo before walk. Enjoy!
Loved visiting this village recently. There is so much to do and it is very family friendly. The guided walks are a must and you are able to choose the length and distance depending on what you would like to see.
We visited for NYE and enjoyed the carnival like atmosphere. Make sure you take your wallet because EVERYTHING is expensive. Also be prepared to pall and walk as parking is at s premium.
There's so much to do, if you're willing to go outside and find it. Be warned it can be quite chilly.
Everyone so friendly. We have been here Winter & Summer and love the vibe of the place.Try the coffee at the little shop near the super market. In summer some shops do keep odd hours so check before you go.
We really enjoyed our spring skiing experience at Thredbo. Our kids got the 3 days for 2 beginners lessons which were well worth it, they learnt to ski pretty well, the staff were excellent in teaching them, it was such a good trip and well worth it. We stayed in Jindabyne at "The Elements East" apartments which by far is the best accomodation in Jindabyne and well worth staying at - modern, spacious, all the mod cons, sleeps 10, drying room, comfy beds, just an awesome place to stay! Loved it
We drove there but after Perisher we were a little dissappointed. Melt had begun on the lower valley. Kids had fun on the small toboggan area (clothing hire expensive for just a few hours of fun). Chairlift was nice though.
I loved my week at Thredbo. The late spring skiing was so much fun. I have skiied nearly 30 days this year across three resorts and I know good snow. This was not good snow, it was good spring snow. The resort was quiet, but loads of fun. I like the village atmosphere, the shops and the food options, make Perisher pale in comparrison.Best runs, Sponars and Antons T-Bars, the super trail was fun but you had to ride it first thing in the morning. Also High Noon was loads of fun and held together till at least 11 each dayI will be back nexty year for sure. Thanks for a great week Perisher resort.
Being Canadian, it seems everybody wanted to give me their advises on Thredbo before we got there! Well, coming from the East coast of Canada (where the highest slope is 650M, -15C and icy conditions are the norm), I truly enjoyed Thredbo. The mountain offers challenging and smooth rides (blue rides are real ones, not greenish), caring for all levels. Chairs are up-to-date and you can really ski from top to bottom (nice!). Grooming was carefully done on the terrain left open, leaving us AWESOME spring ski. I've skied many mountains (including Whistler, Verbier, Deer Valley & Alta) and Thredbo is charming. But be prepare to open your wallet! If you want to save, rent your skis in Jindabyne and do your grocery shopping there (Woolworth).
For a european atmosphere, especially in winter, this is the place to visit. Top notch cafes and restaurants for the fussiest of diners. Family friendly and a fabulous romantic destination as well (outside of school holidays). Always lots to do all year round.
Thredbo nightlife was a lot quieter than expected - where'd it go?! I'm told Perisher is a lot more active...
