I dived the Green Island reef and had a great time. The visibility wasn't fantastic (5m max but I don't know if that was just when I was there) but still saw loads. It didn't quite live up to the hype but was still a great place to dive.
I've snorkeled all through south east Asia and many places in Australia and this would be up there with the best of places I've been... There are vast sea grass beds then nice little bunches of coral in shallow water with abundant fish life of various species... I would recommend being cautious under the bridge as I ran into a rather large barracuda, we also seen turtles a small moray countless breeds of tropical fish and further up under the bridge huge schools of large fish,
We stayed at the resort and while it is expensive...you get what you pay for. We snorkeled several times and it was amazing. I've been to several places in Central America and the Caribbean but this was THE BEST snorkeling experience I have had!If you are staying I recommend doing the picnic dinner. You get lots of food (we had enough for dinner and lunch the next day) and you get the privacy of anywhere on the island.
Green Island Resort, while not cheap at $600/ night is well worth the spend. I stayed one night and found the hotel room was spacious, clean and private. The island is super busy during the day with all the day trippers. Staying on the island you can join in free for all the activities, with snorkelling one of the best picks with the large turtles and tropical fish in the shallow reefs near the beach. Around 4:30pm, when the day trippers leave, the island becomes your own. You do feel like Robinson Crusoe! Walking trips, sunset drinks, fish feeding at night. There are other guests but you really do have lots of privacy. The one restaurant on the island provided great meals.
Booked a tour to Green Island Resort when our cruise ship was in Cairns. We were told it was a paradise for snorkling. The cost of the excursion was very expensive and we had to pay 30$ extra for 2 chairs and a beach umbrella. When we started snorkling, there were so many Jellyfishs that it was almost impossible to avoid them. People were swimming with suits that covered them from head to toe. We didn't stay long in the water and didn't see any fish. For us, it is a tourist trap if you take the day excursion.
