Magnificent old Church and Chapel buildings in the Brisbane CBD. This piece of period architecture in the Brisbane city is a stand out for its design and beautiful period features. The church itself is open every day and you must enter the building itself to appreciate the size and the detail with all the period features of a bygone era.Next to the church is the original 18th century Chapel thats been restored and you can book it for a special function or simply go inside and admire this very small, but impressive piece of history in Brisbane. You can light a candle in memory of lost loved ones or simply leave a small donation. Guided tours are available.
Brilliant! You won't miss the windows. They are fantastic and amazing. Also, you can light a candle there to prey for your beloved ones.
lf you are in to old churches, and buildings this really is a must. The tranquility of the chapel can lead ones thoughts to bygone times, when one can only imagine pioneers lives and struggles. And also their time spent here in worship.
nice old church in the heart of brisbane. the modern sanctuary behind the alter is an interesting touch. tour guides here were very friendly and offered great information.
A sacred place situated at the heart of the city. It's amazing building built on May 12 1850. A shrine of Mary Mackillop located in st. Stephen's Chapel is the oldest church in Queensland. She was declared the Patron of Archdiocese of Brisbane in 2009.
This is a place that even locals haven't always taken advantage of visiting. This chapel is a building from the convict early days in Brisbane and it stands proudly beside the big newer cathedral. It houses an amazing statue of St Mary of the Cross - Mary Mackillop who worshipped there when in Brisbane. Take the time to read the story of this beautiful old building that is Brisbane's heritage. Also do a free tour of the newer cathedral after the 10 a.m. mass and hear the story of the unusual but amazing art works that are part of Brisbane's history.
This is a Cathedral that has stood the test of times and has managed to attract devotees for many centuries. The place has become old of late but still maintains the age old charm. Adjacent to the Cathedral is a small chapel that houses the St. Mary Mackillop. Its Unique feature is it is sculpted from camphor laurel wood whose aroma can be smelled even from a distance. The prayer times are very quiet here, you will experience tranquility right in the heart of Brisbane CBD. It is a serene experience not to be missed. I could see a wedding take place that day and was surprised considering that it was a small place.
A most beautiful Chapel. . Stone throughout. . a great venue for an intimate Wedding. . Anniversary Celebration.. in the heart of the City. .
Magnificent church, right in the heart of the city, beautiful inside and out, with regular services and attended by many city workers in their lunch hours
I started thinking that the cathedral doesn't have the grandeur and wealth of beautiful religious art that the European cathedrals have but that would be unfair because we are in Brisbane, not Rome or Florence and our history in relation to cathedrals started much later. St Stephen's is an elegant cathedral which appears to draw a loyal and regular congregation, despite being in the middle of the city. The lovely older original chapel situated within the cathedral precinct, is my favourite structure in the city and it contains the diocesan shrine to Mary Mackillop. The kind people at St Stephens run tours if you wish to visit and details are on their website. If you are a visitor to Brisbane, this is a lovely place to visit. It is situated right behind the GPO (General Post Office) in a very busy area of the city but the cathedral and grounds are a serene space where office workers often sit during lunchtime for some peace and quiet contemplation.
The cathedral is very nice and very serene. Every mass I have attended here felt so solemn wether or not it was Archbishop Mark Coleridge officiating the mass. Hearing the organ just brings chills. A nice place to go to and reflect, right in the middle of the city.
Attended sunset mass at this cathedral. There were stained glass windows all around. Wished I had more time to look around but it was getting late. I'd come back here again the next time I visit Brisbane.
A beautiful ample of early Brisbane - provides a peaceful respite in the CBD.The Saint Mary McKillop statue is a bonus!Well preserved & tranquil setting to reflect & wind down.I often see regulars coming back to St Stephens just as I have done.
The Old Chapel, once the center of the Catholic Diocese of Brisbane now sits next to the larger Cathedral. Both are well a visit to experience the peaceful interiors after the bustle of Brisbane CBD. The Chapel has a sculpture made out of camphor-wood that lends a beautiful scent, a kind of permanent incense.
Every time we are in Brisbane we visit the old Chapel of St. Stephen's in the heart of Brisbane's CBD. Sculptor John Eliot used the trunk of a century-old camphor laurel tree for this masterpiece. He cut out the wood, then re-combined the elements to form this unique and meaningful statue of a true Australasian pioneer. I say 'Australasian', because she even came to NZ. How she travelled through the enormous distances of early Australia on foot and horseback on her missions, I can only wonder at. Just sit in peace and contemplate for a while.
