We did a day trip to Heathcote and visited the Pink Cliffs, Devils cave and swing bridge (separate reviews). It's an easy walk to both the upper (400 metres) and lower (180 metres) lookouts. I would suggest doing both as you get very different landscapes from both. The kids loved getting out and running on the pathways. Worth a visit. And yes, the cliffs are pink.
I've been coming here since I was about 10 and have since brought my two boys here. It's free, great for an active outling and interesting to see. Many happy memories although you can't scramble all over them now as we did due to erosion. That's OK as they'll still be there for the next generation.
A wonderful free outdoor attraction. A short easy walk of between 5 and 8mins depending on which viewing platform you choose. Great information boards over look the Pink Cliffs which are very informative of the areas mining past and how the Pink Cliffs came to be.Well worth a 45 min detour if travelling through Heathcote.
Any time of day this free local attraction is a photographers delight but at sunset it's simply stunning. Only 5 minutes from Heathcote town itself this is a hidden gem with free parking available its a great walk through the scenic landscape created by the gold diggers in their rush to find the treasure hidden within. The treasure is actually the magnificent vista - enjoy with a glass of the local shiraz at a local winery to truly appreciate its significance.
The pink hills...well, you had to look quite hard to see the pinkness. And unfortunately other people visiting this site did not adhere to signs and were letting their kids run all over the cliffs, damaging what might have been nice scenery once (maybe?) Either way, the walk was nice but the destination was...well, it was disappointing. Definitely wasted our time on this one.
If you are passing through Heathcote, you may find this site worth a ten minute visit but don't go out of your way! There are so many other great things to see in this small country town that I'm always amazed that Pink Cliff's are suggested as a top tourist attraction. I live in Heathcote and if I was visiting I would head immediately for the tourist information centre in the centre of town. The lovely volunteer ladies, will supply you with maps of the location of over 100 local wineries. Maps of local walks, lookout for the Valley of the Liquid Ambers, spectacular in Autumn. The River Road walk and the walks through the McIvor Ranges for the energetic and the Cellar and Store, opposite the tourist information centre where many of the local wines can be tasted without driving.
Short bike ride or car trip from the centre of town takes you to a bushland area with many small cliffs in all shades of pink. Quite scenic and interesting to see. There is an upper and lower viewing area on well marked wide gravel paths with some small rocky areas. About a kilometer to walk around both areas. Very dry area this visit. Would be interesting to see after some rain. Some small flowering native bushes along the walk. No amenities or ice cream shops - just a car park and a walking track.
I had read in a guide book that this was a place to see so I made sure we went out of our way to get there. It’s a nice stroll to the viewing area and the “cliffs” are quite pretty but some in our party weren’t overly impressed.
Nice short drive from Bendigo (or Melbourne) worth it. Please dont walk on the Pink Cliffs as everyone else seems too. It ruins them.
This is a unique experience. This area is one where sluthing took place during the gold rush. It's pink & powdery. The story boards give you the full story. A must see in Heathcote!
Not a bad little walk after a big cooked breakfast in local accommodation. Pink Cliffs is just off High St, Heathcote. Major soil erosion from gold mining times has left an amazing landscape which varies in colour from sand-coloured to pink. Different and interesting! No wonder Pink Cliffs Cafe/Louis de Castella wines is across the road - a coffee after this little walk would have been great but alas they weren't open on Monday.
The cliffs were formed by early goldmining activities and are interesting to walk around. Best not to choose a really hot day to walk around as it can be draining.
great town great wines lovely people will go back there again except the motel
