Young wine maker with his own special blend of grapes.Really enjoyed our tasting, the wine maker gave us a very detailed in sight into his ideas for flavours blends.Hard to pick which we loved the most.Definitely return again next year.
This is the second visit to Scion for my husband and I. We feel it is a must when visiting the Rutherglen Wine Region. We were made to feel so welcome both times we visited. The wines are superb and Rowly speaks with such passion about his wines. Hand made the wines reflect this in their quality.

Lovely place and people, with great wines a little different for the others in the area. Won't spoil the surprise, drop in for a taste and enjoy!!
Scion was our first stop on a weekend of local wine tasting. Even though it was late in the day the wine maker took as long as we wanted to work through the wine list and feed off his enthusiasm for his craft. Straight away you know you are not in the typical "big" wines type establishment. Scion are trail blazers. Durif with 3% Viognier? Alcohol around 12%. An After Dark 18% Durif dessert wine? Wine served with chocolate. So do yourself a favour and visit. Scion don't sell retail and are careful about managing their clientele. We liked they way they promoted other establishments in the region.
Please dont all go here and ruin the relaxed, off the map and totally cool vibe they have going. Only go here if youre serious about enjoying wine thats different and have passion for what you like, no matter what that is when it comes to wine. Anyway, we loved the chat, the wine and the nibbles and could have stayed there all day. If wed have been asked to help out we probably would have as well, its that kind of place.Go here, open your mind and enjoy wine made differently to the main stream.
We too left Scion to last - not always the best idea in an area so FULL of wineries like Rutherglen - but what a great result! The wines are all SO different and interesting in comparison to the other very traditional Rutherglen wines we had tasted that day, and I will happily admit that we LOVE traditional Rutherglen reds especially, so to find someone prepared to 'experiment' with these wonderful grapes AND still develop great wines was not only unexpected but also a true delight!
Hi LindsayR,Thanks for your comments. You said you think your concerns were ‘trivial’ but they are important to us. We want you to have the best of Cellar Door experiences. We pride ourselves on providing a special tasting, including exceptional fortified wines, accompanying food and personalized attention. That’s why we have the Trip Advisor rating we do.To clarify our signage for parking: it is needed to avoid congestion at the entrance to our cellar door and optimize general access, to ensure disabled access and finally to allow safe passage of farm vehicles. I’m sure you’ll understand these priorities.I remember your visit well and, through our conversation, understood your interest in big red wines. I explained that our focus was not on ‘big Durif’ and you did choose nevertheless to try two current releases. We all have individual taste, don’t we?I also recall that one of our tasting fee signs within our small cellar door was close to you. We charge this tasting fee at our discretion as we feel it helps new customers to appreciate the value of the time and attention we spend on taking our visitors on a personalised tasting journey. It is of course refundable on any purchase and in reality, rarely charged. If you’ve had trouble with our signage, so might others, so we’ve taken the step of reviewing their size and prominence to avoid any further embarrassment on both sides. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.Rowly
