At the last stop of the vintage tram in Bendigo, this piace brings you in the past. For me, a italian, a piace I have never seen before and not to forgive.
Once again Bendigo knows how to show case not only its history but the history of thr event and the feature. China and Chinese veing second nature for the Bendigonians is shared and an education that is not gained anywhere else. It is a must experience for all school children studying Australian and more specifically Victorian and Bendigo History.
We had the place to ourselves- not many people got off the tram to see this place which I thought was a shame as it is unique and charming. Still used as a place of worship, a guide explained the meaning and significance of the items, furniture and art on display. I learned a lot!
We came out on the talking tram and only planned to spend half an hour. The place is small, and the entry cost is probably a little high, but it's still worth visiting. We came during a quiet period, as no one else was there, so the gentleman at the desk gave us a tour of the entire place, describing its stories and history. It was very interesting, and we stayed a whole hour. It wouldn't have been as good without the guided commentary, so thanks a lot to the guide! Make sure to do the fortune sticks as they're a fun little addition.
The history of this old temple is very interesting. Although it is not very big, it is worth a visit. It was interesting speaking with the man who was working there. He was very informative.
Very old museum there were many like this temple but they were destroyed and this is the only one that has survived. It was going to be destroyed but bad weather stopped them destroying it. Very old and ancient. Lions at the front with balls in there mouths if you roll the ball inside it is meant to give you good fortune, so they say...
This is part of the chinese museum and a nice small place to visit. Excellent for taking pictures. The place itself isnt very big but has some nice preservation from the older days.
This is a short walk from downtown. Well worth visiting to see and hear about the proud heritage of Australian Chinese.
We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of information the guide had to offernot only about the religious use of the joss house but also about the chinese community of Bendigo .easy to spend an hour looking and listening surrounded by incense smoke
Yes it's a bit out of town but is worth a visit. The Bendigo Talking Tram service will get you there and back or you could drive there. A delightful little place with lots of information about the history of the Chinese community in Bendigo. The volunteer staff are well informed and very welcoming. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to try the Chinese horoscopes sticks.
I went here based on recommendations and it was not what I expected. It was quite informative of the Chinese religious beliefs. I was there for an hour (on tram trip) but it only took about half an hour. I would recommend if you are going to visit to drive yourself there or otherwise you will spend as much time waiting for the tram back. Unless you have a strong interest in Chinese religion I would not recommend that you bother to visit.
I hope I remember his name, but Darren (apologies if I got it wrong) was a fountain if great information. This old piece of history is an important part of the Australian culture and should not be missed. The fact that it is still a 'working' temple is also lovely.
It is situated in a weird location, but that just shows how the world has evolved around it. Really interesting, Stan was a great guide and I learnt a lot about Chinese culture and the history of Bendigo. Definitely worth a stop, but won't take up too time.
This venue is run by volunteers I suspect. Even though they themselves have a sound knowledge it is not imparted to the visitors in a manner that we can all gain knowledge of the history of this wonderful site. The hand outs are simple and easy to read but leave you wanting to know more. Perhaps a video for visitors would be a worthwhile investment. We left having enjoyed our visit but wanting to know so much more about the history and the Chinese who lived in the area.
Spent an hour being guided through this historic building by our tour guide, Pat, who was truly lovely and very informative. The statues and placement of items were well explained, the beauty of the colour and the sequined cloths were captivating.
