A well rewarded walk. The 2km + challenging walk uphill was long forgotten about once we laid eyes on the amazing boulders ahead. The skywalk above was truly fantastic. Unfortunately we didn't have the clearest of views due to the smoke still lingering from the recent bushfires, but was still definitely worth it.Take plenty of water.
A worth walk about 2.2km up to the top, just make sure to wear a comfortable foot wear for the hike up and climbing on rocks also bring bottle of water (~1liter).For those with young ones please do take care and time for those little legs and once on the rock there is climb for those littlies.
A stunning addition to the Porongorups National Park.A very scenic but challenging walk of ~2km each direction. The walk is uphill from the car park and varies between relatively flat hard ground to large and steep rocky steps. The skywalk makes it truly worth the effort though with panoramic views of the surrounding region. Our weather was a perfect 25 degrees but it can get very warm so please remember to carry water.
A dense Forrest trail leads to the Castle Rock summit and skywalk. What a view! One of the best lookouts I have visited in Western Australia. The skywalk is suspended and on clear days the view is amazing. The trail is an uphill walk, moderate fitness is beneficial. It is a short trail compared to others in the area. Toilet and picnic facilities down below. There are some very old karri trees in the Forrest. Bring along plenty of water and wear closed shoes.
The new walkway lookout at Castle Rock is at the end of a beautiful hike in the Porongorups. The walk is about 2 hours return, longer with wildflower stops and is a moderately challenging hike. There are some lovely views along the way, but the main attraction is the skywalk, reached by clambering up some large rocks with the assistance of steel handholds. People who have a strong dislike of heights might find it daunting, but the ladder is very secure (with a cage on the outside) and the views from the skywalk are incredible. You can see all the way to the south coast on a clear day. You also pass by the Balancing Rock on the way. Snacks and water should be packed; wear good shoes. Well worth the effort!
One of the highlight of this national park is Castle Rock, Balancing Rock and the Granite Skywalk which are all on the one walk. Some of the brochures state that it is 1.6 km each way and starts with a flat easy walk. WRONG!! The walk is 2.2 km each way and starts with uphill and continues with uphill for about 99% of the way there (and 99% of the way back is downhill!!). We picked a bad day as it was wet and windy but we decided to give it a try anyway. The path is clear but is rough in parts and good shoes are needed. There are distance markers every 0.5 km to let you know how you are going. Balancing Rock is near the top and is amazing that it is still standing. Not far past Balancing Rock is Castle Rock and a lookout platform to the south(?). You can then scramble a little bit and climb a ladder to the Granite Skywalk. We did not do this as it was wet and slippery and being so foggy would not have a view any better than we had.Location – Excellent, close to Albany and sealed roads all the way, Service – Very Good – Toilets, Shelter and picnic tables. Track is clear but uneven and good shoes required, Value – Normal park entry fee, Atmosphere – Excellent for scenery, Overall – Excellent (Want to go back on good weather day).
The Skywalk is the 'cherry on the top' of this beautiful area. Allow 4 hours to really appreciate the bush & stunning views. The walk is challenging but by taking it slowly & listening to the birds & admiring the bush flowers along the way it is do-able by all ages with a reasonable level of fitness.Take water & snacks with you. Toilets, BBQs & picnic tables are provided near to the car park.
This is a grade 5 walk as per the sign in car park so a degree of fitness , suitable shoes and own water required.Essentially take your time and have multiple rests and just enjoy the wonderful bush . The track is well maintained but I imagine could be very slippery with heavy rain.I am not super fit so did entire return trip in under3 hrs . The last part throgh the boulders defeated me but the alternative lookout is still spectacular. My husband and teenage son went up the final climb to the sky walk itself and were amazed by the engineering. As good a walk/ view as we have seen anywhere in the world.
Really worth the climb but it's more difficult than the tourism and townspeople say. not for the seriously overweight, unfit or weak-hearted. That said, you don't need to be Edmund Hillary either.
All these three things are the same walk. On tripadvisor there are separate entries for Castle Rock and balancing rock, but its the same walk.Castle rock skywalk is the most heavily promoted walk in the Porongorups, with good cause as it is the best. This is a good 90 minute return walk. Most of it is a gradual hill through woodland, but at the top things get interesting fast.Balancing Rock is an interesting attraction and there are plenty of other boulders to get around, under or over. There is then a ladder and the skywalk walkway bolted onto a massive boulder has nice views. Stirling Ranges can be seen one way, the coast the other.Castle Rock itself is a big slab of rock with a sheer vertical drop off. A good photo opportunity.
Spectacular! I can't believe that this amazing skywalk doesn't have a review in tripadvisor yet. it's a half a day hike on the way between Albany and Perth, a small detour of 27 km east to Mount Barker. The entrance to the Pronogurup national park costs 12$ (make sure you have the exact amount in cash cause you just place it in an envelop. There is a two km beautiful hike in the bush until you reach the huge granite rock. The climbing is amazing (a six meters ladder!) and the skywalk is superb!!!! don't miss it!!!We hiked with our six years old son and four years old daughter, if you are a family that likes to hike and your not afraid of a little adventure it is totally feasible.
