The area near Macas is home to one of Ecuador’s indigenous tribes, the Shuar. I toured a Shuar community with Sigor Travel in November, 2010. The guide, Froilan Nusirquia, was very knowledgeable about the Shuar life style- their culture, their jungle environment, and the difficulties they have experienced, and still experience in the modern world. We travelled by bus, canoe, and on foot through a variety of terrains, studied many types of plants and insects, and Froilan helped me to understand how the Shuar are able to live well in a difficult environment by using nature and their vast knowledge of the jungle. The day I spent with Froilan was one of my most interesting in Ecuador.Sigor Travel’s Froilan is a fine guide- he works very hard to ensure that one has a complete immersion in the culture. I did only a full day tour , but I believe that visitors would also enjoy a stay of a few nights as well. Camping facilities are possible in the Shuar community we visited. Froilan speaks Shuar and Spanish. I highly recommend his services to visitors. His office- at 10 de Agosto and Guamote- is centrally located near the bus station, the main market, and the inexpensive, very clean and safe Hotel Heliconia where I stayed in Macas.Macas is a great place to visit- and a tour with Sigor Travel will make your visit even better.
