圣弗朗西斯克大教堂

The San Francisco church is a landmark of Salta. It is very beautiful and painted in bright yellow and red colors. The most spectacular view is from the outside. Due to the inner city location with lack of space it is difficult to take a "complete" photo. Your walking tour through Salta should definitely take you to this church (one block away from the city's main square).

When I first saw it in the distance, I was convinced that it had to be the Cathedral, a misapprehension created by the sight of the high Bell Tower, a tapering 4-tiered vertical construction that turns out to be the highest belfry in South America, and whose bell was created from the bronze of cannons used in the celebrated Battle of Salta that took place during the War of Independence. The colour tones are dramatic: white pillars simulating ivory breaking up the general exterior composed of warm red-brown stone cladding that resembles terra cotta. A statue of the revered saint stands in front of the church. The single nave in the interior is surmounted by a barrel-shaped roof pierced by a dome. A museum and library offer partial compensation for the lack of ornamentation and religious art that are such a compelling feature of the magnificent Cathedral in the Plaza nearby. 4 stars for the exterior; 2 for the interior; average 3.

Closed when I visited, the main exterior was covered up for renovations. I can imagine that it was really quite striking.

It is a very nice church. And there is a image of Maria de la dulce espera, to whom may ask for help to be a mum or you can thanks for having the luck of being one.

The churches in this region of Argentina are more beautiful (I think) than the main church in Buenos Aires. Yes, it is under renovation, but I don't think that is a reason to stay away. It is such a lovely, low key Jesuit church. Certainly take some time to visit the interior and look to the courtyard garden.

Great exterior, one of the poster-buildings in Salta, unfortunately presently under renovation. We love the different colors on the tower and facade.

This church will look great once finished, meanwhile, stay away from it there are workers all over and its not a safe place to walk around

This church is undergoing major external renovations. Nevertheless, the exterior bright red building and bell tower are attractive. The grand exterior is definitely an invitation to go inside - what a huge disappointment. Inside is dull, unattractive and uninviting. Pity, because it has so much potential.

Amazing workmanship,a must visit in Salta. Beautiful tiles and building. You can wander past and look in foyer or have full visit.

Situated on the corner of Caseros and Cordoba, it’s an imposing building. Currently it’s closed to the public as it’s under restoration, but still admire the building as you walk past. It’s covered in a veil with a picture of the building printed on it.There is a gift shop to the side (see my pictures)

Very nice church, vivid colours and high bell tower. Architecturally more interesting than the Cathedral. Was being restored at a cost of over 3million pesos, we toured the whole outside but could not go in. Still worth the look when in Salta! Hope this review was helpful!

Totally different than the cathedral, teaches us about peace, art and simplicity. It is worthy a visit for sure!

Magnificent from the fantastic shade, brick red, of its walls to its high rise tower.There are guided tours every half hour, starting at 9:30 am. Thecloisters are so peacefull
