Had the fortune of having the Glacier view from my hotel, and luckier even to wake up one morning to see it snowed. The day before we had gone trekking to the base of the Glacier, was a 45 minute walk, we took the road that goes on the side of a stream, which was very beautiful. Totally recommend going there.
If you can get to Laguna Esmeralda, go there instead. But if you have only a short time, this hike can get you a nice view. The hike is dusty and ugly if you stay on the main path (former ski run), so make sure you stay to the right (as you face the mountain) on the path by the river. Much more scenic and less traveled. I hiked to the glacier which in and of itself is not that interesting/spectacular but I got a nice view of the Ushuaia harbor. Rather than hiking all the way to the glaciar, I would recommend taking the path to the right about 2/3's of the way up to the glacier. I found it on my way down. There is a seating area before the final hike up to the glacier, and at this point there is another path (off to the right as you face the glacier), that goes another 1/2 mile or so (some elevation gain), and provides you with a wider view of the town and the channel. Very few people because they are all headed to the glacier, and you are facing the water as you trek. A much nicer option in my opinion.
It's a really easy trekking, and anyone can do it. I think it took me 3hours. When I was there, the cableway wasn't working. My suggestion is to take a cab (which is really cheap), then he will drop you on the bottom the mountain.
Took taxi to bottom of old ski hill and then a three hour stroll to top of the trail. We had a beautiful warm day with nice view of town and port. We had only one day and had several options available, but we thought the hike and view would be interesting. It gets steep towards end and the walk down was hard on my old knees, so a walking pole helped.
If you have a couple of hours to burn it is worth the walk up. But it is definitely not the best walk around town, neither the best vieuw our glacier. Most of the walk up is along a road, but on the other hand you can start it right from town.
Easy walk from the city center with nice views over the beagle channel and the glacier. The way is good marked and easy to find.
This walk is quite nice and it starts on the city so you dont actually have to pay for transportation/entry. The Glacier itself is not as impressive as other attractions in Patagonia, but it is worth going there since you have a really good view of the city in the end.
The coffee in the little shop good. Glacier Not really. But then we had just come from Moreno so spoilt
That was one of my favorite things to see in Ushuaia! The mountain is beautiful! But maybe that is because I'm from a country where there are not so many mountians and almost no snow. Maybe if you are from a mountain region, the Martial Glaciar wont amaze you that much. That is because, when some one imagines a glaciar, most otf the time, the person will imagine something like Perito moreno. But that is not the same kind of glaciar. For me it looked more like an avarage snow montain... what was, for me, an amazing place to be!It is quite easy to go there. You can go walking from the city, or take a taxi that will be quite cheap. The entrance to the park is free.
While I am sure it was a great glacier at some point in time, it is far from impressive today. However, the hike to the snow was enjoyable and the views on the way up are worthwhile. Bring gear for freak snow storms and cold but rest assured the weather will change within minutes.
The glacier itself is nothing spectacular, but the views of Ushuaia from the top are well-worth the hike! An easy taxi-ride out of town and, atleast during the busy season, there were plenty of taxis waiting for us when we were done!
Even during summer, is very windy. Bing a jacket. Take a cab until the Tea House, then you can walk until the top. It's well sinalized, don't need any guide. The view is really nice and you can see all the city. To come back, there will be some cabs waiting for everybody who went up. The cab to the city center costs about 80 pesos.
The glacier was very small and not particularly inspiring but the views from the top of the walk were lovely. A good intro to high places for kids. Take gear and push on up the glacier if able.
We went to the glacier on foot from the city. You need to spend several hours on this hike, but it is completely worth it. Also, there are no fees for anything. I loved it.
We started the hike from town, it was an easy walk along the road up to a forest where we took the side route. There was some uphill but not very difficult. Took about an hour from the town to the base of the trail, then there is a wide dirt road or a thin trail through the mountains. Do not worry about not being fit enough, it is uphill but not too steep and you see everyone walking it, from small children to older people. Once this trail is finished be sure to hike up to the top. It is signposted as difficult and taking an hour each way but my sister and I are not particularly fit and found it average only talking 40 mins. Once up take the route to the left where there's even more snow and less people! Highly reccomend!
