I wouldn't suggest seeking out this castle, despite it being one of the main attractions in Uzghorod. Pretty basic, boring view from the bastion and annoyingly rude staff.

I decided to go to Ukraine for one day from Slovakia, and therefore Uzhhorod was the city to go to. On the top of the hill, there is an old, strong castle which looks today more or less as it should have looked in the 18th century. Uzhhorod was at the borders of the Hungarian kingdom / Austro-Hungarian empire and therefore probably deserved to be strongly fortified. The castle itself looks all right though it is not a thing of beauty... it offers nice viewpoints on the surroundings. It has had a looooong history: for instance, during the 9th century a Magyar warlord stormed the at-this-time wooden fortress and beheaded the Slavonic lord...But the most interesting thing in the castle remains that it is also a museum with a diversity of rooms in which its history (and the one of the Ukrainian Carpathian region) is explained through objects, maps, old books, clothes, etc... There are interesting items from the communist period and WWII. Unfortunately, there is nothing explained in English / German / French and even Russian, whilst most of the texts as only in Ukrainian language and sometimes in Hungarian (which did not help me much...) However, there are enough visual items not to be bored (such as uniforms, maps, drawings) and there is still a delicious outdated, soviet-style atmosphere in this place.Tripadvisor allows to rate either "average" or "very good", since there is nothing in between those ratings... so I rate it "very good" since it is definitely not average. Note that you may eat in the castle.Tips: 1/ There are 2 restaurants and we ate in one of them. The food was correct and the cost for 4 people did not exceed EUR30. 2/ avoid the weird museum of wax figures (additional fee): Mike Tyson's wax statue has nothing to do in the courtyard of a Medieval Castle, in my view...

We decided that it was a perfect place to spend some time on a rainy summer's day. The entrance fee was reasonable. We didnt go to the wax museum which required an additional entrance fee. There are different exhibitions on each floor. For my biologist son it was very interesting illustrating the local flora and fauna. Also had historical exhibitions. The musuem/castle has very well kept gardens and from the edge one can good a good panoramic view of Uzghorod/Ungvar below. Not the most modern castle but very nice.

I've heard that this Castle was not worth visiting after the Palanok Castle in Mukacheve. However, I found it well preserved with a great museum featuring Transcarpathian etnography. Museum of Wax figures was a little spooky and has a separate fee. The grounds surrounding the Castle are beautifully maintained.

This is one of the best castles in Ukraine. The castle architecture was very well preserved. The grounds of the castle are very green, beautiful and pleasant. The exposition inside of the castle gives a great insight into the history of the region, architecture of the castle, life of the owners of the castle in different time periods. There is a nice cafe enclosed to the outer wall of the castle.

I've been so many times there... The castle is in a good condition and has not a lot of damage and that gives tourists unique opportunity to feel the magic of medieval age. Take a walk in the yard and touch the massive walls. You can find exhibitions inside the main building of the castle dedicated to the history of Transcarpathian region and the culture of it's people. If you looking for some dark and horror emotions go down to the сastle cellar where people were tortured. On the bright side you can taste some wine in another cellar as well. http://www.zkmuseum.com

The castle has some good views from one part of the walls. There are some nice statues in the grounds too. The main part of the castle appears to be complete but the church that once stood in the same grounds is no longer there. In the central courtyard is a very deep well. The castle building contains exhibitions that give a feel for the traditional Ukraine way of life. These include costumes, tools, weapons and musical instruments. There are staff in several rooms who can explain (in Ukrainian) in more detail about some of the exhibits. Don't expect multi-lingual explanations via headsets or interactive exhibits like in modern western museums. You can explore the whole castle in a couple of hours.

The castle is located in the town centre and it is a beautiful one. I love Uzhhorod - the castle certainly adds to its beauty and atmosphere. There is a museum inside the castle - nothing special however. Still, the views from the castle over Uzhhorod and the surroundings is lovely. Admission is 15 UAH now, not 10 UAH; and 5 UAH for kids.

Uzhhorod castle is a stone heart of this wonderful town, that represents a mixture of architectural styles, and materials between the 13th and 18th centuries and figured heavily in the history of Hungary. The castle was built by the Drugeth family which received the grounds from Charles I of Hungary. The fortification of the castle took place in the 16th and 17th centuries, after it underwent numerous sieges, and you may find fabulous the fact that the castle was never taken! Nowadays, there is a local history museum on the territory of the castle. When visiting this castle,we felt incredible satisfaction from breathing the air of history and true nature!!!

Costs 10UAH (little over a US dollar). The cafes and restaurants there are OK, but the castle is not far from the center, so I'd suggest you go to Korzo street for better options. There's a cafe called "Пiд замком" ("under/by the castle") not far from it but I highly recommend anything but that place. The waitress was so shockingly bad and rude and the service was so awful (no service at all)!.. She wouldn't come up to us for about 15 minutes, and when she finally did, she threw the menu at the table, snatched it back as soon as we ordered something (we were thinking of ordering other stuff also but I guess she knew better). When she brought the order she immediately demanded money. We asked if we are required to pay right away, and she scornfully sniffed and asked "What, it's that difficult?" I said that it wasn't difficult at all but can we at least have the check please? To which she said that there's no check, and when I said that I would still like to see it, she said "Can't you count?" and then shot at us all the things that we ordered, and their price. I demonstratively took out my phone and asked her to repeat all that so that I could calculate it myself. She ran away. She came back again in a while with the check and was indeed much nicer (as in, she didn't talk). We talked to the owner and he apologized and told us that he had seen her and had had a talk with her. However, every 2-3 minutes she would come and ask if we were ready to pay (we were still not done with eating). We collected money but wouldn't give her out of principle, and only when we were leaving, we left the money, the exact sum of what we ordered, no tip at all!On a good note, I highly recommend the Kaktus restaurant (yes, spelled with a "K"). Not expensive, excellent service, right in the center, and they have a live band playing in the evenings! Amazing place!

Worth visiting just for 30-mins relaxation and little touch of history. Authentic but not so fine restaurant inside, with cute terrace. Costs 10 hryvnas.

This castle is situated almost in the middle of the town. It looks like any castle in ordinar imagination. High walls, middle age style. Also there is option (for extra money) to make locak wine tasting.

We managed to find the restaurant in the castle, and we were really pleased, however the waiter was completely baffled with everything on the menu and it was a real struggle to order anything. We had our salads which were fine and then my husband ordered the lamb,, a little while later a duck dish arrived, and my order of a goose leg arrived, mine looked as if it had been boiled, no colour and looked uncooked. We decided to cut our losses and paid for the salads and wine and left. definitely the worst evening meal of our trip.. Also we were the only people in the restaurant, so no ambience.

It was good. The place, atmosphere, food and wine. I can visit it again. As I understood the price was most probably above the average for Uzhhorod

Very impressive, interesting, and historic. Shows medieval castle and time of the inquisition. Definitely worth a look.
