My wife and I went to see Esmeralda while in Moscow. This ballet was wonderful from a top notch ballet company. I can't recommend this highly enough. Try to get your hotel concierge to help you buy the tickets direct from the website (you will save a fortune).

If you are a lover of Russian ballet, come and see the performances of Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre. I loved "The Nutcracker" very much, both music and dancing were of high quality. The theatre itself has recently been reconstructed so it is very well-organised. I adored the glass ceiling in the buffet, it's so unusual to be able to see the sky in a theatre.

I visited 3 opera performances in 2 days - and all of them were excellent. Particularly impressive was the one on their Small Stage! However, you have to choose where you sit carefully, as the acoustics are not good everywhere.

Attended a corporate event here involving a 40-minute performance that was moving and quirky in equal measure, but always professional and beautifully executed. The venue looks brand new with its recent refurbishment, and the auditorium is small enough to add an intimacy that the bigger theatres can't match. This evening may have converted me to ballet.

I admire Theaters and this one is one of my favorite. Real Academic and traditional school of musical art. Last time I was there and I almost cry seeing Eugene Onegin. Plus the theater is after reconstruction and looks gorgeous

This theatre is wonderful. Quite central and a short walk from the metro. Not a large theatre but quite beautiful. Saw the Swan Lake Ballet here in July 2014 and it was a fantastic performance. Recommend attending an opera or ballet here. Book ahead. Tickets sell out months ahead of the performances.

This is the most convenient place to listen Opera in Moscow - Theater is newly renovated, but also has it's historical charm. Starting with convenient underground parking, lines-less wardrobes and spacious buffets, you earn very good mood to start seeing performance - which are always perfect, I've never seen something bad there, my favorite is Figaro on this stage. And tickets have very good prices, every seat has good view and sound, unlikely to "Bolshoy", where you can spend $200 for 3rd level balcony without view at all. Strongly recommend for visit.

Stasik, as this theatre is coloquially called by the Moscovites, has made incredible progress over the past 10 years. The best evidence is that tickets to a number of their performances sell out well in advance and re-sellers' prices have rocketed to the skies. Although it is clear that the Bolshoi, Moscow historical No.1 venue for opera and ballet, has greater budgets for each of their premieres, Stasik's repertoire is very diverse and generally amazing. Safe and adotable option for both big classic ballets and modern ballet (I believe this was the first company in Russia to have Nacho Duato stage his own short ballets at the time when Moscow was all about the big and serious ballet shows). Their recently premiered 'Aida' is also bound to become one of the top highlights of the season. And by the way, their cafe is much much better than Bolshoi's :)

My wife and attended the ballet Gisele on the 13th June. The theater is lovely and the ballet was superb.

We went to see the Little mermaid (Ballet) and it was a fantastic performance. Brilliant dancers, good music and a beautiful scenography. The Theatre itself was also a nice experience, small and cosy but with plenty of space outside. A former outdoor yard had been converted into an indoor area with Photo exhibitions and cafe.

It is not worse than the Bolshoy. Has weaker brand but probably better repertoir. Nacho Duato's ballets are great, check if they run ones on your evening

If you want to see excellent opera or ballet in Moscow, you will not be disappointed with an evening at the Stanislavsky. The theater is more intimate and with less grandeur than the Bolshoi. The principals at the Stanislavsky are younger and not as established stars as the Bolshoi, but we thought their corps de ballet was stronger. The smaller house also adds a lot to the artistic experience.Perhaps the best analogy is the New York State Theater housing the New York City Opera and the New York City while across the Lincoln Center plaza sits the more upscale Metropolitan Opera and American Ballet Theater. On a cost adjusted basis, the Stanislavsky comes out on top. But if you can swallow the price of the Bolshoi tickets, they can't be beat.

Stanislavsky Theatre is a very good choice for opera. I have seen about a dozen productions there, they were visually beautifull and musically perfect. It is a good alternative, specially when the tickets to Bolshoi are overpriced and virtually impossible to get outside the black market.
