Unique small town that has the port on one side, and a lovely coastal walk on the other side. There are many bars and restaurants.
Take the time to run all the little streets that are connected horizontally and vertically, and guides you through all of Rab parks, churches, galleries, walls, ... Unforgettable is view on the old city from walls in the park Komrcar.
Although small and not easy to get to, I had to take a bus from Opatija (2 leave per day) to the bus station of Rab and then wait 1 hour in the bus station to catch the bus to the centre of historic Rab, it really is worth it. Croatia is chock full of quant little towns and Rab is one of them. The square in front of the church is the most pittoresque. Museum-wise, I would not bother. There are very few museums and what is available is not of that much interest. Rab is more of a walk-about town. The square where the bus drops you off is as well. This is a tiny medieval town that can easily be done in 2 hours but if you take lunch on the main square where the post office is, you might want to take 3 hours. It's peaceful, it's calm and the views from the ramparts of the surrounding countryside are really breath-taking. If you are anywhere near Rab, I would recommend it. If you spend a few days in Opatija and are looking for a half-day excursion, Rab would be the answer!
We loved exploring the Upper road with it's quartet of ancient churches, old palaces and wonderful sea views
Cannot come to Rab without visiting old town and participate in islands traditional Rabske fjere event. This is unique happening where all of the citizens participate in. For 3 days Rab is going back in medieval times and presents life and history how it was. This is really something special, unique and worth seeing and coming for. Old town by itself is beautiful, experience by walking only is remarkable, strongly reccommended!
We really enjoyed walking the streets of the Old Town. They are very lively, full of history, coulture and Mediterranean charm.
Right back from a short visit to the island of Rab and the old town Rab. 3 nights (exactly 2 this year since the rain ruined the saturday) from friday to sunday with living history giving a special atmosphere to the town of Rab. People in medieval costumes, cosy squares and streets full of interesting stands, tasty food and good wine. Many local visitors and a totally friendly atmosphere. Everything ends up sunday when the big ceremony of local crossbowers takes up the duel with crossbowers from Italy and makes a great performance. At midnight the celebration ends with fantastic fireworks. Definitely one of the nicest festivals of this kind in Croatia.....
In the medieval town of 2002 has been organized Medieval Festival Middle ages Festival. As the 1449 - 1456 caught plague epidemic (leprosy), and one of the most attractive group Group Rab Lepers perform from 25-27. 07 of each year at the festival.
Picturesque medieval town, you can spend hours here! You can find something interesting on corner in every street. Little to much of shops with really bad merchandise.Great coffee places, not bad nightlife...
It was a really nice old town, with tiny streets and many of churches. The sightview also very good. Worth to visit it.
Rab old city was a delight to walk through. The buildings and walkways seemed to well preserved, I could imagine that Rab used to look very similar hundreds of years ago. It was a pleasure walking up the three main streets, up to one of the tallest towers, near the statue with the palm trees. Most of the restaurants that you pass by on your way are actually old houses and buildings converted into restaurants. The restaurants were beautifully set up and reminded me, once again, of times gone by. In the center 'plaza' type space of the old town I found a number of souvenir stores to browse through. You could find the usual Rab and Croatia magnets and other small items. I bought a beautiful spoon rest, with an image of the sea and a lighthouse painted on it. There was also a vast collection of lighthouses, from tiny to big ones. Great for presents if you can easily take them back. There are a few local shops, mostly selling swimwear and related items. Not like a shopping hub or anything. However there were some very tasteful 'lavendar' collections and shops. Lavender is apparently quite big in this area, and there were many options to buy lavender themed presents. Right next to the souvenir shops, there was an excellent ice cream shop, try it if you find it! We were walking around in groups, and it was quite pleasant going through the old town.
We went to Rab for the weekend in the beginning of the season. The old town is very charming and one can feel the relaxed mentality of the local people and get in sync with the first cup of coffee on one of many terraces on the main square. We especially liked exploring small streets in search for good bars and restaurants. The island itself has many new bike tracks allowing the people to go and visit neighbouring beaches... overall-we'll come back again
I might sound bias because it is my Mother's home town after all and I have been brought up here by my late grandparents, so Rab has a great hold on my heart! However I have been for the last 20 years been coming as a guest (considering that I've been living in England for that time) and I have experience lots of positive change, new restaurants, great service and welcoming atitude of local people (lets face it most of them don't know that that is where my roots are).I have traveled to many places but to me, there is no place in the world like Rab and I would recomend it to everyone!
The tourist office offers also guided tours, I suggest to take one of those, the commercial area is very cosy and there are several shops.
Rab city is the main city on the island, if you are on the island, watch the city center, it is a old city center, with lot of sights. The harbour also very nice, with lot of boats and yachts.
