we visited the waterfall in November and loved every bit of it. The walk to the waterfall is amazing however there were many tourist there. We parked the car at the entrance and walked to the fall. there are nice boardwalks to help you through. After climbing down the stairs the walk to the waterfall is not boardwalk. There is a small shrine to honour the first lady tour guide who would get tourists to the waterfall. the waterfall looks amazing both away and up close. Must do when in Reykjavik.
In places like this you benefit from self drive as you can spend as much time as you want exploring and taking photographs. We often saw groups at falls with limited visiting time due to their schedule. The second week in November was maybe too late in the season to get close and enjoy the full majesty of Dettifoss. There was quite a bit of snow and paths were roped off.... and for safety reasons we chose not to cross the line and chance our footing. On the walk over from the car park it was also very icy, and the car park was a bit of a skating rink too! But it was good all the same. We could only get to the west side as the road to the east side was impassible due to weather so we couldn't see it from the 'Prometheus' side. As it happened, we walked up stream a short distance to view Selfoss and we actually liked it better. You should certainly do both, and don't miss Selfoss upstream especially if you are on the west side of the river! There are no cafe or shop facilities here, but a small wooden toilet block at the car park.
The waterfalls in iceland were spectacular and so accesible we found ourselves stopping all the time to visit one after the other. We were not attached to a tour and found it quite doable, we had our rooms booked through Iceland Air and were very pleased.
Unlike some of the other sites, this is off the beaten path and didn't have as many visitors while we were there. The hike to the top is sure to leave you winded, but it is well worth the effort! Keep your eyes open for rainbows in the mist from the falls.
Subsequent to visiting both Selfoss & Dentifoss Falls, which are located in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, you will never forget the deafening roar of the cascading, falling waters. It is both a very scenic drive to get to the trailhead to the falls, and a very easy hike to any area overlooking these falls. It is truly worth the effort to hike, and see these magnificent waterfalls; which are but two are the great many natural wonders; available throughout Iceland. I spent a month here, driving over 1,300 miles, around the island; as well as a side trip to the interior to see the Gulfoss Falls area; which is also worth the time and effort!
This is an impressive, beautiful waterfall. Beautiful drive getting there. Easy manageable walk from the parking lot and gift shop to the views of the waterfall. A sign claimed Selfoss surpassed Niagara in fury, which is a gross exaggeration. Nonetheless, a great photo opportunity. Also a vantage point for distant glaciers.
This only is allready worth visiting Iceland. Iceland is just full of those things, Behind every corner is a surprise.
Many prople will stop at Dettifoss and go no further ... but Selfoss is just as good. It's best seen from the eastern side of the valley which means the gravel road to Dettifoss and then the hike to Selfoss (about 30 minutes from the car park). The track is marked with yellow topped posts which makes it a bit easier to find the best route.
Great falls. If you visit Dettifoss, be sure to also take the trouble to go visit this one. Takes about a 20-30 min walk to get there. Well worth your trouble, its very nice. Imagine onde big waterfall as far as the eye can see. Thats Selfoss for you. Enjoy.
This is about Selfoss and nearby Dettifoss. I have this on "good authority." Some years ago one of the astronauts who traveled to the moon was taken to these falls. "I've been to the moon. This is even more magnificent," he's reputed to have said. Honestly, if I had a choice, I think I'd choose the lunar excursion. On the other hand. . . By the way, the early astronauts did train for a time in Iceland. If you've been, you'll understand. If you haven't, and you can't get to the moon, get to Iceland!
