If you are staying near here do not miss this challenging but wonderful walk. We had to cross the river using the log bridge, then you need to use the rope rails to help you up part of the walk (not too much though) and keep following the path up. You need to watch your footing as you will be constantly admiring the stunning scenery on the way up. Pick a clear day and make sure you have drinks and snacks for the walk, if you only do one walk here - do this one.
A very pleasant walk, although could be a bit of a challenge for those with vertigo as it runs along cliff edges. Note, the log crossing the river is taken away towards the end of October so you cannot cross to the Southern side. Not the most spectacular of falls, but a lovely walk all the same. Waterproof shoes a must!!!
We knew very little about the walk, except that it was described as having a few challenges and could be underwhelming in dry weather, but when is it ever dry in Iceland? It was at the end of a short road just off what used to be the main route back to Reykjavik around the Hvalfjordur before the new tunnel under the fjord was built. The estimated time for the walk is 2.5-3.5 hours, but it is only a 5.5km return walk and it only takes us 1.5 hours, but we are fit and walk quite fast. The walk goes thru a cave, over a stream via a single log with cable, and up via ropes and cables. The walk is steep and goes over some rocky scree areas. It is very close to the cliff line, but the views are spectacular. The canyon with the waterfall is extremely narrow and rocky, lined with ferns, and filled with nesting birds. The view points are very vertiginous, but it wasn't really a difficult walk, just interestingly challenging at some points. I don't have a great sense of balance but I didn't ever feel really worried by the walk and it is certainly not hard if you are fit and like walking and have reasonable shoes. There is a good description of the walk on Wikipedia.
It only took us 2.5 hours to hike up to the falls. It is one of the more challenging hikes I've been on (I am only a recreational hiker but workout regularly and am in good shape) but I barely noticed it because it was just so fun and beautiful. We went on the east side of the falls (so we crossed the stream at the bottom) and I was glad we did because we got great views of the waterfall all the way up! Definitely worth a trip outside of Reykjavik! For those reviewers wondering about footwear, I hiked in train running shoes and did just fine in mid-October.
Be prepared for a somewhat challenging hike to get to Glymur. Warning: although it's the tallest waterfall in Iceland, it's not the most spectacular one. The beauty of the trip to this waterfall is the hike itself: one has to go through a little cave, cross a river on a trunk of a tree (with ropes to help one pass) & there're bits where you have to search for the yellow paint markings on the stones to find your route. Calculate around 2 hours for a return trip if you're with children or older people, but possible to also do it in about 1,25h if you're walking in a determined manner ;-)
This is the longest waterfall in Iceland. And for me once of the moste beautifull place. Specialy when you like hike ;)
This was one of the first hikes I did in while in Iceland and it was probably my favorite! I can't even describe the view of the waterfall, it looked like something out of a movie. Never a dull moment on this hike, as there are so many cool things to see along the way!
Glymur is reputed to be the tallest waterfall in Iceland. Located at the back of a breathtaking, deep canyon it can only be reached after a rewarding hike. The absence of any sign of civilization and the limited number of fellow tourists you cross ad to its charm.A roughly signposted trail leads from the car parking straight to the north bank of the canyon. Don’t be fooled by the steps suggesting a steep descent. You only have to go down a few meters and then take a left through a cave.Arrived at the bottom of the canyon you need to cross the river, using a fixed log with a rope for balance. Finally you make your way up the south bank of the canyon and reach a variety of viewpoints, advancing ever closer towards the waterfall. In total the hike will take two to three hours, depending on how far you go. There is a lot of ascending and descending over uneven terrain, sometimes with a rope for assistance. Still, anyone with moderate condition should be fine and my vertigo didn’t bother me.Obviously you should take along sufficient drink as there are no facilities near Glymur. I also encourage you to bring food and enjoy lunch at one of the viewpoints.
Amazing, beautiful hike. The highlight of our trip to Iceland. walked clear to the top of the falls and then crossed the river before the falls in our bare feet across rocks. Was breathtaking and gorgeous. Don't miss it.
The Glymur Falls are the tallest falls in Iceland. You can hike up to the top of the mountains using amazing trails while enjoying stunning views. It is an impressive experience and achievable in about 2 - 3 hours round trip. This is the best thing we did in Iceland.
We had a rental car and used GPS to find the parking lot. Parking space is limited but you can park off the side of the road. The pavement ends a short distance from the parking lot and the road has lots of deep potholes. Once parked expect a hike of at least 2.5 miles just to get a view of the falls. The trail includes some very steep terrain some of which includes using a rope to pull yourself up (or let yourself down) the hills. Also there is a water crossing using a wooden log (power pole size) and a cable hand rail for balance. Some of the terrain is very steep with some shear cliffs. The trail also includes going through a rocky cave.Overall the hike is enjoyable if you enjoy such a thing. One of our group decided to call it quits at the water crossing and never saw the falls. If you have any walking or mobility problems DON'T ATTEMPT THIS.Go to Gullfoss Waterfall instead. It is a very easy walk and it too is beautiful.
This is a short but somewhat challenging hike through beautiful scenery to a spectacular waterfall. Awesome. The drive there from Reykjavik is lovely too. This can be done as a day trip from there.
