Kaz, In Turkish means "Dark". Kaz Mountain is a stretch of mountain peaks and valleys. Spare a minute or two to read about the beautiful secret that beholds this Dark Mountain, a "Virgin" territory in North West Turkey, untouched by LARGE SCALE commercial tourism and a must for those seeking more than just " run of the mill" vacation and surely for those lovers in the world with still a twinkle in their eyes!Balikesir is still an off track Turkish holiday resort and not as yet exploited by large scale tourism. Yet, it has some of the most amazing infra structure and 5 stars hotels and apart-hotels which would make some of the other popular resorts feel shy.I have always tried to find new destinations or resorts/hotels favoured by locals. One thing for sure, if a place is acceptable and loved by the locals, it certainly would be good enough for visitors. This is just my philosophy, not a statement! More about Balikesir some other time, lets get back to Kaz Mountain.Amidst heavy Olive trees forest and dense greenery, the mountain trek starts from the border of a local village called Zeytinli - The Village of Olives, in the district of Edremit. Walking up the Kaz ( not heavy duty climbing or trekking, comfortable for a normal able bodied person), hidden from the outside world right in the middle of the mountain, some half way from the top known as Mount of Ida, is a magnificent Waterfall - the point where the fall start and forms a lake is know as "Hasan Boguldu" ( literally meaning," where Hasan drowned"!). The water from the fall carries on for miles into the wilderness downstream, forming several other smaller falls and running stream of natural pure crystal clear ice cold water coming from the melting snow at the top of the Mount Ida.KAZ mountain is famous for it's abundance in natural beauty and habitat, which includes, bears, deer, foxes and many other wild species, still in their natural habitat surrounded by olive forest and other horticulture at the top of the mountain. However, another reason for it's popularity, specially with the local, is that Hasan Boguldu, The lake at the bottom of the Waterfall, witnessed a legendry love story with a sad tune to it! The story goes like this... A handsome young village boy who lived in a village at the bottom of the mountain, fell n love with Emine, a beautiful young damsel who lived at the top of the mountain on Mount Ida. They had very different lifestyle, tradition and cultural practice. They one day met in the woods and fell in love and despite these difference eventual decided to marry. Due to their cultural and traditional differences, both had family oppositions yet they wanted to marry with both families' consent and blessings. In order to win this, Hasan was given a task by Emine's father to prove his strength and loyalty to the bride by following a traditional task of carrying a huge bag of salt from the bottom of the mountain to Mount Ida, an uphill task of carrying almost 20kg bag for many hundred meters! The day came when Hasan took a huge bag of salt and started to climb the mountain to prove his love and loyalty to his bride to be and her family..Emine also joined him in the climb in order to support and guide him. After a while, half way through, salt started to irritate Hasan's back under the August sun and he got tired. However, according to tradition Hasan had to climb in order to win her bride in marriage, so he continued. As they both continued, Hasan was exhausted and finally fell down. Emine helped him up and offered to carry the bag for some way, in order to fulfil the family condition, thinking that she will hand over the bag to him once they are near the top. With this in mind she started walking up with the bag on her shoulders, thinking that Hasan is following her. She continued near to the top before realizing that Hasan was not behind him. Emine wanted to turn back and search for Hasan, but as it was getting dark and the wild beast were coming out, she had no choice other than reach the top and tell her family what had happened. The next morning, Emine set out to search for Hasan but could not find him. After a while, walking down to the waterfall, Emine found Hasan's shirt in the lake at the bottom of the waterfall. Emine realized that Hasan fell down because of tiredness and drowned in the lake. Not able to accept a life without her loved one, Emine hanged herself from a tree next to the lake with Hasan's shirt! After this sad instance, this small lake at the bottom of the water fall is called "Hasan Boguldu" (Hasan Drowned) and the tree next to the lake from which Emine joined her love is called " The Chinar of Emine! ( Tree of Emine ) ( see pictures )If that story is not enough to make you visit this place, then here are some more reasons; After The Alps, which has the highest oxygen level in air, this mountainous region has the second highest world rating of air oxygen. The surroundings are lush green, the locals full of hospitality and admiration for visitors. Local produce such as honey, olive, walnuts, pine nuts and many other vegetable and dry fruits are lined up on the road side by village farmers for you to take for next to nothing price. The natural trek and lush green surroundings will certainly win your hear if you are a nature lover. The waterfall, lake and streams makes an ideal place to find yourself and join with nature. For me, it was being in Paradise, this side of life! The trek is not dangerous or "heavy duty" but it is meant for able bodied. I am here in April, with still a bit chill in the air, requiring a light jacket. In my opinion the best time would be from end may to mid September. And don't forget your camera and of course good walking/trekking shoes. Those who are desirous of visiting and don't know where to start, how to get there and how to plan, drop me a line and be glad to share my experience. Believe me, your experience will be for a life time!If you do go, please pay my respect to Hasan Boguldu and Chinar of Emine!
Beautiful scenery, stunning, we went up into the mountains with a group, had a b b q ,walks and it was fresh and the locals were so pleased to see us, well worth the trip.
Our family is living in Akcay for 5 years. This is the first time we took Kaz dagi tour with jeep safari. Tour started in the morning around 10 o'clock (ended 18.00) with 4 jeep which were carrying 10 people each. We visited only some part of the Kaz mountains .There were hidden waterfalls and beauty of nature was incredible . Oxygen level was very high... i felt myself like i am flying like an eagle over the Kaz mountains!!! i highly recommend this jeep safari tour.Kaz dagi tour team were great. Our guide gives a lot of information about each places history and teach us how to choose olive soap. We visited Adatepe village and Yesilyurt village. We also learned all the process of olive and olive oil. Adatepe olive oil museum still have nostalgia we bought a lot of present like olive soap, magnet, book ,postcard they had very nice gift market inside the museum. This part of the tour were nice and warm but when you go to mountains part you should definitely wear some warm clothes and comfortable shoes.it is long walk and some part of the mountains quite difficult for old people but at the otherhand there were a lot of places which you can rest and then continue walk .
