It is the monument you will have in mind when you think of Novi Sad. Great Gothic style but we couldn't reach the inside to feel the atmosphere.
Novi Sad is a beautiful place. Beautiful architecture! This cathedral looks fantastic and the surroundings of this place are number of beautiful buildings like town halls etc. This place is also good for shopping.
It's situated in the center of the town, thats not a surprise, just for the fact that is a catholic temple. You must visit it but I think the most interesting part is the facade.
Pleasant interior, not the most beautiful cathedral I've seen but the exterior, especially the tiled roof and quite lovely.
The church itself is not a cathedral, as we the inhabitants call it. It is a parish church. The cathedral is in Subotica some 100km north. This is the third church built on that place. As Novi Sad began being settled, first church was erected in 18th century. Due to its size it was replaced by a bigger one which was unfortunately destroyed during the 1848/1849 uprising by the Hungarians firing from Petrovaradin fortress (around 2/3 of the city was destroyed). This third, neogotic church was built in 1891. The architect, Georg Molnar, who also envisioned the town hall, made church plans pro bono (you can see his bust, placed as a sign of gratitude, when you enter the church on the left. This is considered a rarety because he is neither a saint nor a benefactor). All of the interior is widely consisted of gifts and donations. Masses are held regularly in Hungarian and Croatian languages respectively.
One of my personal favorites of all times!! Standing tall on the city square, it rays with its beauty and calmness. I always enjoy a cup of excellent coffee in the cafes on the square while looking at the building.
I liked this church very much: it's gothic, very high, with a nice coloured roof. On the inside is a typical austro-hungarian church, worth visiting for the wood forniture and for the hungarian writings: another piece in the cultural puzzle of this amazing land.
Trg Slobode (Liberty Square) in Novi Sad is a beautiful open space dominated by the Church of St. Mary and the monument of Svetozar Miletic, a bronze sculpture by Ivan Mestrovic, who seems to be challenging the church, like David to Goliath. For me, those two pieces together are magic. St. Mary's is thin and tall and Catholic, in an area dominated by the Orthodox. It is as if the Catholic's are giving the Orthodox the middle finger. Miletic was the mayor of Novi Sad and the political leader of Serbs in Vojvodina until his death in 1901. He faces the Catholic church head on as if to challenge it, his right arm raised above his head and his fingers as if they are grasping something that will be thrown, the eyes concentrating ahead as if aiming. I'm sure that is not the meaning of the sculpture, but there seems to me to be some interplay between the two and I love them both. Mestrovic is an absolute master.
I just love Gothic style. Cathedral is located in city centre, clean, spacy. Whole area is remarcable and must see if you are in Novi Sad.
This attraction you can not miss because it is situated in the centar of the city on the maim square and main street. It's beautiful from inside as it is beautiful from the outside. It's a must visit attraction and it is not a cathedral, it's the Church of 'Maria's name' (Crkva Imena Marijinog) but everybody call it cathedral because it looks like one.
Cathedral is in the very center of town, worth to visit interior
You can't miss the cathedral, it is beautiful and dominates the town square
Bellissima cattedrale, soprattutto esternamente. E' interamente in stile gotico e domina la piazza centrale di Novi Sad. Interessanti gli altorilievi all'interno.
L'unica struttura in oro è l'ostensorio. Ci so o anche diverse statue di santi.
