This monastery in the Paphos Forest was an ancient and restful place. A distinct lack of tourist trap shops but worth a visit with spectacular views
A beautiful monastery, a very interesting and worthwhile trip. There was so much history and plenty to see.
T his was one of the monastries I hadn't got to visit on my other trips to the island so we allocated a day to go visit. after a 2 hour drive we eventually reached the monastry but there was not much of a welcome in the hillside. It has a romantic title, Our Lady of the Golden Pomegrante' and their are splendid views from both outside and inside. As we entered a young man went into the shop and sat behind the counter. We had a quick look and earmarked some potential purchased but wanted to go and see the church first.. We admired the church and wondered where the icons by St. Luke were. Perhaps they were in the Treasury? We crossed the courtyard and tried the door. Despite the sign saying that it should be open the door was locked. The young man from the shop came by and growled that it was a holiday. for whom? Not the rest of Cyprus for sure. Maybe we would go see the winery. Wrong! It too was closed. Not a soul was to be seen. Desperately disappointed we left. Unfortunately we couldn't purchase anything from the shop because grumpy young man had locked up and gone. If the tourist board is going to highlight and brown sign all these churches and monastries it would be good if they could ensure they want visitors. I can appreciate that constant streams of tourists may not be wanted. It in that case don't say you do. A very disgruntled potential pilgrim!
As it was with the other Monasteries I saw on my holiday, this was a beautiful place with so much interesting and historic things to see. We had a tour guide to take us through and I learned so much. Absolutely worth it.
Only thing missing was information. A tour guide of 15 or 20 minutes would be perfect. Beautiful but small
need a car about 2 hrs drive but worth it great drive up the mountains , make sure you take something to cover up your body with if you are wearing a low top. the place is beautiful and peaceful, worth the trip
Just a beautiful, peaceful place. It was a miserable wet day when we called by and they were not expecting anyone. No fuss, just a stunning church.
OK to see if you are in the area, but a little off the beaten track. nice scenery and good views. Care where you take photos.
We visited late December, when very few people were about and the cafe and shop were closed. Nonetheless, the decoration and iconography in the church are fascinating, as was the stroll round the small courtyard.
This now unused monastery has one of the most beautiful churches with masses of history. It used to be a centre of wine making and icon painting. The sole remaining abbot will share information and experiences with any visitor. There is a lovely cafeteria which provides simple but delicious meals. The views are stunning.
Takes an hour bus ride form Paphos, the view on the way up is beautiful. Dress appropriately, it's an active monastery. It's a moderate sized church, with grounds to walk around (about a 30 min stay in total), again, the views are great - they overlook the valley. They have a shop inside too, which sells books, Orthodox religious icons and label-less Zivania for only 6 Euro which is great. Zivania is a strong clear spirit. Alcohol above 45% abv has no label, so this is definitely strong alcohol. 5 minutes down the road is a winery, you can get a tour of the cellar, how its made and taste it.
Beautiful monastery hidden away in the mountains. Not rich as Kykkos but quiet and restful. The views over the valley are stunning and overlook the village of Panaega which is the village where Archbishop Makarious was born.
there really is nothing to see but the outside of the building.there is a cafe on site but nothing much else
I come to this monastery every year. It takes a while but the drive is scenic & sets the mood for your arrival. It's small with a very unusual triangular courtyard & the place is full of plants & flowers. The little church is beautiful with amazing calm & stillness. No hustle or bustle, you can just wander around. The views are splendid out over the dam & the mountains. There is a gift shop, the monks here paint icons. They also make wine & it's excellent. This isn't the place to come if you want entertainment but it's wonderful if you want a little peace & beauty.
Lovely monastery with a long, flower filled colonnade and a beautifully decorated church. The monastery produces good quality wine and liqueurs which are sold at very reasonalbe prices in the small gift shop - it is also possible to visit the old wine cellars on site.Outside there is a cafe shaded by a massive ancient conifer with lovely views across the valley from its terrace. There are also local vendors outside the gates selling nuts, sweets and a few tourist items.Ideal to combine with a visit to the Makarios house and museum in the beautiful village of Panagia and Agia Moni Monastery as all three lie within a couple of kilometres of each other.
