We had some great days at Hochkar, despite a pretty terrible snow season. The field was big with lots of different types and styles and levels of runs. Some great inbetween-tree stuff and a good number of lifts. Get there early for the quiet mornings. Great for kids too.

Hochkar could be one of the better ski-places, if only they did not ruin the experience with the outrageously poor , overall customer service levels. To start with there are only a couple of Huttes at the most frequented places - and only one at the ski-school, where parents spend the most time waiting for their kids. Consequently this one is constantly over-crowded, and at dinner-time it is near impossible to get food - or anything- on time. Service is sloppy, unkind, and people are still allowed to smoke inside (??!) , despite the fact that this supposedly is the place to feed your kids between the school-courses. The school has the same name as this hutte, so is the ski-rental place, and the only shop, a few hundred metres uphill - so they are presumably run by the same family. It shows, too, as all four have this poor service level. I had my child in the school for an entire week, spent a small fortune with them with the rentals, school- and in their shop- but all the while I had the feeling that they were doing me a favour. The children in the school were treated the same way : if you don't speak German, you are completely ignored, as the few teachers with language skills were not utilised teaching the groups, but in the even better paying one-to-one, private lessons. My child was often left behind in the group, and in one occasion could not go to the toilet in time, as the teacher just ignored her on one of the slopes. Language was in general a problem, English was spoken only by a few, and rather poorly. If you wanted to eat someplace else, you needed to ski into one of the up-hill restaurants, but even from these only one was up to decent standards, hidden behind the lower car-park, at the bottom of some red pistes. To get here, you need either to walk a lot, or ski in - which with a small, beginner child was not an option. The hotel restaurant by the shop is also OK, but rather pricey. The slopes were OK, and moderately well tended, although due to the crowds and the lack of fresh snow most of them were icy and ruined by the afternoon. This is not their fault of course, but I have seen some places where ratracks operate during the day, too, to refresh the pistes.Overall, I would not recommend Hochkar, as for this kind of money there are 100s of places in Austria, where they'll treat you and your kids much-much better.
