This is my favorite museum in Heraklion. I live locally and visit it periodically. The natural history stuff is of international class, including live and stuffed animals (including turtles, water turtles, frogs, fish, crabs), earthquake simulation. The quality of presentation is in large because this musuem is part of the local university. Most interesting for kids are the interactive activities, the childern's, library, the video room.Long term period exchibitions include- dinosaurs- holograms/laser/light sceince exhibits. The mueaum also has a shop. Here is its webpage:http://www.nhmc.uoc.gr/en
just so full of history lovely.plenty to see and learn.easy to get too and staff willing to explain things to you.
Nice variety of things to see, our favourite was the 'light & lazer' section. We also found the earthquake simulator very interesting but it's just not suitable for people with back problems.Overall a good visit :)
If you visited the Knossos archeological site and want to learn more about this culture, this Museum offers you everything. Situated in a modern building, the rooms are well organized in different periods of the 5000 years of settlements and each display is explained in Greek and English. Recommended is also the cafeteria which offers excellent Greek cakes. Tip for Retired persons: 50% discount of entrance fee.
Well worth a visit and has lots of things of interest to kids. The adult entry cost 8 euros each. As well as the life size moving dinosaurs and static wildlife displays they had an earthquake simulator with scheduled presentations by a multi lingual attendant giving experience of the ferocity of recent Japanese earthquakes and information on how to keep safe during an earthquake. The top floor light phenomena display with holograms and lots of other light tricks was excellent. An interactive educational kids corner can also be enjoyed by adults if you are prepared to crawl into the kid sized caves.
A great museum for all the family. If you visit Heraklion, don't miss this one. This is not the biggest Museum you would have visited but it is perfectly formed. Set out over four floors the Museum takes you through a timeline from the modern era right through to the prehistoric, every exhibit has its own place, from the holograms and light shows (with a really knowledgeable staff member who is keen to show off the exhibits) to the dinosaurs on the bottom floor. I can' t rate this place highly enough.
Very clean and tidy museum. Not very big, but very nicely laid out. Plenty of dinosaurs at present. Good earthquake simulator! Rolling special exhibitions - when we visited it had an amazing collection of holograms and optical illusions.
Very nice museum, especially for children. The museum offers better price per ticket for students. The tour in the museum include a 45 min. Movie about dinosaurs and an earthquake simulation.
Don't miss this museum. It is full of fascinating artifacts going back thousands of years. A "must see" on Crete.
I just love being to this museum! You have a wide veriety of interactional stands, where you can move something, look at phisical experiments, even some live animals.I totly recommend everyone to visit this place.
A strange place, children will enjoy the huge moving (well a bit) dinosaurs and the earthquake simulator and there is a live (small) animal area. Overall it is a bit of a muddle and overpriced and a place of last resort.
there was an asimulator for erthquakes and it was amazing to feel the earthquake 7,6 in taiwan or 7 to japan.there were holograms and it was fantastic we spend there 3 hours i could not believe it
A very entertaining museum with plenty to do. Very educational and we learned a number of facts. Staff are very friendly and happy to oblige. This is undercover so a great way to spend a few hours during the day out of the sun. A easy walk along the foreshore from the port area. 5 € for seniors to get in.
The light show currently on was very interesting. The guide showing the different exhibitions obviously loved what she was doing and was taking the time to show / explain them to the kids.
Natural history museum is on the beach way so you can have really nice walk by the near port. You can easilly spot it because of giant dinosaur which is placed in exterior of museum.Museum has 4 floors. You can find there fauna and flora of Crete but not as much as expected. Stuffed animals and little of flowers and also rocks.Lots of dynamic dinosaurus (nice). You can also watch a movie (15 mins;from Patagonia) about them in small cinema. On September there is big exposition of Holograms, which is in some parts mind blowingOne floor was about Physics, mostly Optics and illusions; quite interactive. They have simulator of earthquake what is probabbly best part of whole excursion. You will experience about 7.5 of richter scale and get some general info.Entrance for students is 5€, for students from University of Crete its free and adult ticket is about 8 to 10€. Staff is helpful and provides a lot of information which was super.I was not disappointed but also not excited as much.
