Booked this excursion through Sail Away in the main street of Kardamena. Left around 9am and arrived in Nisyros mid-morning. Coaches waiting to take us to the volcano (entrance fee 2 euro), where you can walk down to the surface and see small 'steam holes' emitting sulfur (yuk). Small cafe selling coffees, soft drinks and snacks. Next stop was the village on the very top of the crater. Typical blue/white village, very picturesque. Village square with Church, and two tavernas. A short walk around the village and time for a coffee or quick snack then back to the harbour for a couple of hours free time. I found a very nice taverna just a short walk from the harbour by a small beach. After a tasty chicken and potato casserole (not on the menu) and salad I had time for a stroll around the shops before heading back to the boat and returning to Kos. At 20 euro, this trip was excellent value and highly recommended. Talk to Peter or Dave at Sail Away.

It was my first volcano trip so it was very interesting and fascinating. I was there after a 2-3 hours of rain so the smell was a very interesting mix.

We were lucky in that we were the only coach, being the second last day of the season, so we had the site to ourselves.Great experience, even though I have been to other volcanic sites around the world.

This was one of the highlights of our holiday. Standing in the crater of a volcano was an awesome experience and a live one at that to. If you don't like rotten egg smells this is not the place for you and make sure you have footwear suitable for the walk down, so no flip flops!

I had a boyhood ambition to visit a volcano and this fulfilled it. Although the overall trip cost a few bob (return boat trip, bus to the crater etc.) the EUR2 fee to get in was ridiculously good value. There is not a lot to see in terms of information etc. but what do you need to know when the thing is all around you? The sulphur smell hangs heavy in the air, there are columns of steam rising from holes in the ground, there are hot mud pools and a moonscape all around. My tip would be to try and get there late in the afternoon when the tour buses have gone. It is a lot quieter from 4pm onwards.

Absolutely stunning views from the bus up to the crater. The whole experience is out of this world and is a must if you visit the island. Also the main town at the harbour has some lovely sights as well as some lovely restaurants to grab a bite to eat

May the best attraction in the island. Actually the whole island is an active volcano. You have the opportunity to pay a close visit. Try getting up a bit early, in order to avoid the majority of tourists coming by buses. 2 euros entrance totally worth it. Do not visit wearing your slippers, as it may be hot. Carry some water, your camera and wear a hat to avoid the heat. Also, pay a visit not only to Stefanos but also to the other craters on the opposite site.

We arrived by boat to the harbour of Pali and hired a car for the day. The visit to the craters and volcanoes was most interesting and the brochures were printed in English, not always the case in Greece, so we actually knew what we were looking at.The cafe had everything you could need plus a lot of information that wasn't in the brochure. This is a walk for an able bodied person in sensible shoes. We would probably have stayed longer and explored more if we had arrived earlier or later in the day.

W came with our own sailboat to Nisyros. W parked in the harbour of Pali (not Mandraki the main harbor plenty of ferrys boats). Pali was very good harbour in Nysiros too; w rent a car there very easily and went around 5:30 to the Volcano in 20mn only. The road is very nice to reach our destination. W passed by Mandraki village too it's very cute with souvenir shops, ice cream shops, one pharmacy, 1 bakery, 1 supermarket and lot of greek restaurants. Then once w arrived to the sleeping active volcano w parked the car, we paid 2euros by pers to enter. and w walked just 5mn to reach the center of the volcano. it was very special feeling. U will smell the sulfure and feel the hot under ur feet. Take care of sliding. It is a nice experience. If u need anything there is a small shop selling water and some snacks there with a WC as well and will provide u info brochure about the volcano. When w came back to the Pali harbour w ate extremely tasty dinner at afroditi restaurant. And then slept on the boat. Next day w left to Kos. But i still have the taste and the lovely memory of this pure greek island.

Wow!! Now i can say that i've been inside an active volcano. We booked this trip from a tour kiosk in Kardemena and we really weren't disappointed. The boat trip over take around an hour if i remember correctly and it was lovely to see the neighbouring islands. Getting to Nisyros we then had to pay a 2 euro fee to access the volcano and we then boarded the bus that took us on a lovely trip through the hills and to the volcano. Please remember to wear decent footwear for this trip, you will need to walk over rocky terrain which is pretty steep in some parts. The first thing you will notice is the very strong egg like smell, which is the sulphur from the volcano. This though you get used to. Once down in the flat of the volcano please be careful as there are literally bubbling pools of hot acid like liquid that will melt you! The heat picks up somewhat down in the volcano so be sure to take water. This trip was amazing and i can recommend to any able bodied person to go there.

At the small harbour of Nisyros you can have a good cappuccino or Greek coffee at Ellinis or a good lunch. The owner is Australian and can advise you what to order as to not always eat Gyros and dolma. The restaurant Salinikios offers very good local food and the staff is also very friendly. You can rent scooters at Captain Rentals and investigate the Island at your own pace. A map is supplied and the scooters are well maintained.A typical Greek harbour, well worth a visit, also for sailing boats.

A boat trip to Nisyros with company Sail Away was perfect! It was much cheaper than via our travel agency and we really like all the attractions it offered such as monastery, volcano and walking around the town. A true Greek atmosphere could be breathed in there.

An hour each way on the boat, some walking through the town, a visit to the small monastery, and something to eat, before the coach journey to the volcano. The guide, Costas, was brilliant. Very knowledgabe and kept us interested. A long day, but worth it.

Even though it is a bit ‘touristy’ it is still a day not to be missed if visiting Kos. It is easy to book in Kardamena, all the operators appear so stick to standard pricing, and the process from ferry crossing, volcano visit and return journey is straightforward and without hassle. Our trip included a visit to the village of Nikia and enhanced the experience of the day by witnessing a true Greek village with its narrow streets and traditional houses, and the view of the volcano from there gives you an insight of what is next as the people in the crater look like ants! Visiting the volcano itself is also memorable – yes it does smell of sulphur but is only to be expected where volcanic activity is concerned. Before returning on the ferry ample time is allowed to wander through the streets of Mandraki and sample a traditional lunch and have a drink at one of the local tavernas. Make sure you visit the monastery as well as although it looks a long walk and climb it is worth it, and there is lots to see in the narrow streets en route.

Nisyros is a quiet paradise. When many island resorts are being over run by tourists, traffic and commerce, Nisyros remains as an unspoiled haven of peace and tranquility. Nisyros possesses the clear water beauty of the Aegean sea coupled with a small village atmosphere. There are no busy intersections only small coastal and mountain roads.
