Awesome palce to buy souvenirs!
It's no possible to visit Athens without see Plaka. Beautiful small streets with ancient houses . Many a thousand shops around. You can buy many Greek folklore traditional souvenirs. Many restaurants taverns Kafe . Very graphic place. Many tourists . Nice view to Acropolis .
Less than 10 minutes walking West from Syntagma square you will get in to Plaka - the Athens old town. Full of interesting old houses, narrow streets and hundreds of shops oriented toward the tourist - art, souvenirs, clothing, delicacies, etc. Also many cafes and restaurants. The only downside - cars are allowed to drive there. Would be so much nicer if they made it 100% pedestrian zone. But still worth spending several hours here, especially in late afternoon.
This place is full of old houses and structures. It sits right below the acropolis, you can get lost here with all the zig zag roads and intersections. There are some restos and taverns here where people just chill.
I recommend taking a slow stroll through Plaka. The architecture is pretty. It has all your souvenir essentials and it's not as busy as Monastiraki Square. We went for a walk during the night and came across some really nice cafes. Just take a wonder around.
By far the best shops and Restaurants in Athens. Don't be afraid to negotiate prices with the shops for souveniers, you will be surprised.
The oldest part of Athens with lots of tourists, tourist shops and tourist cafes/restaurants. However, careful selection can produce good choices and the plaka covers a lot of ground with it's maze of interlocking streets and byways. Please don't get put off going as it really is fascinating to wander through. How could one not want to go here when on a trip to this ancient city?
Plaka is a great place to eat, it is right by the Stoa and Temple of Hephaestus and within walking distance of the Acropolis. Crafts people with stalls sell all sorts of goods, I bought soap and a painted plaque, there is no sense of being hassled.
It is the nicest place to feel the air of the old Athens. Start your exploration either from Mitropoleos sq.( Athens' kathedral) or from Monastiraki sq. Wander in the narrow streets and feel the air of how Athens used to be one century ago.Old neoklassikal houses excellent renovated, boutique cafes, nice souvenir shops and most of all feel the Air of the Akropolis. Dont miss to visit Adrianou str. Mnisikleous str, Nikodimou str. Visit the neighbourhood "Anafiotika" and then exit to Dionisiou Areopagitou pedestrian str. (where is the Akropolis Museum) and the Herodous Attikos theater.
