Have seen the show in numerous venues since 1987. This production has always been my favourite and still is. The show has been updated with new orchestrations, song and costumes. The cast are stellar. Fabulous triple threat performers that skate effortlessly. The staff working here are all friendly and helpful. Absolutely recommend this show to anyone visiting the area.
I would say, it was a great show, lots of people, lots of children, lots of happiness. Great venue - close to the parking, big hall, great design of the scene, colourful costumes, exceptional sound, live music and it is SO FAMOUS. For sure it should be enough to let this musical live long in your memories, but...it is a bit expensive and the voices of the show team where a bit disturbing. They can do a great show, but if you have sensible ears, you will feel that it is far from perfection, some where close to screaming rather than singing, I was expecting more since it was musical. I was together with friends, who visited this musical years ago and they felt the same way about voices.
What can I say, Starlight Express in a purpose built arena, provides the audience, with a show to remember. Unlike other musicals Starlight takes the audience into the show, wherever you sit you become part of the spectacle. Its fast and furious, with the cast skating through the crowd. Dont worry that the show is sung in German, it seems to add to the atmosphere and as long as you know the story, you will fully understand what is going on. The cast are great, committed and enthusiastic and at the end they have a Megamix, combining all the hits from the show and share this fully with the audience, this is the time to get the cameras and videos out, because unlike other shows, Starlight allows you to get your own pics and videos during this encore. I have watched a lot of musicals in my time, but Starlight has to be up there with the very best, In its 25th year and over 15million shows, they must be doing something right.
Eye-catching setting-up and decorations, as well as the amazing idea of how to tell a story, considering all of which was invented 25 years ago. If you are a big fan of steel city and have a child heart, don't mind some silly simple story, it can be a nice option when travelling in Bochum.A group ticket will be a better choice (around 25 eu each), which can be much cheaper than going there individually, and of course much more fun to watch it together with friends. Was visiting there with a few friends in July 2013, at time of 25th anniversary of the Show. Quite a lot of people. My local friends told me that they have been grown up with this show and full of childhood memory. After that, one can have something to talk about with the locals. Enjoy.
I have seen Starlight 4 times in the last 18 months - my son stars in the show as Hopper 1 and so my 1st experience was to watch his opening night, however, i would say even if he wasn't in the show i would recommend it to everyone young and old - the whole cast, sound, lighting and stage effects is phenomenal, yes its in German but its easy to follow, there are so many talented performers in one place and doing such amazing skating, acrobatics and singing the whole experience could be watched time and time again and you will see something you won't remember seeing before.......I'm heading back later this month and am super excited about seeing my son but equally excited at seeing the show...
What else can I say, AWESOME. I really want to see it again, yes it was obviously in German, but you get the drift without understanding german. The whole cast were superb, we especially liked Richard Leavey as Krupp. there is so much going on you could do with three heads to see it all.
Thus is second time I have seen starlight, after a first visit more then ten years ago. Starlight is a timeless classic, all performers were excellent. The atmosphere in this hall is amazing. My right year old daughter loved it too.
This is a fantastic experience. It beats a long list of musical hands down in terms of costumes, show, setup and sheer scale. The races are incredible, the seating by the race track is great. I loved this as a kid and was glad I went again now as a 30+ year old. Highly recommended for families with kids.
Andrew Lloyd Weber must be one of those insane geniuses. "I have a great idea for a musical - people on rollerskates pretending to be trains and singing!" and amazingly, it works! As the other reviewers indicate, don't worry about the German. If you read the Wikipedia plot summary, you'll be easily able to follow along. My wife and son speak zero German and they both loved it. 8yr old was enthralled for the entire show, and we really thought he was going to fall asleep during the first 5 minutes after an exhausting day. Nope! His favorite part may well have been running around on the tracks during intermission, he thought that was super.
If you a are fan of musical theatre - the purpose built venue in Bochum is a must do. Fantastic spectacle, and dont let the fact its in German put you off ...its great all the same for non-German speakers. The Ramada is 30m walk from the venue, and Bochum is easy on the train from Dusseldorf airport ...a great excursion.
I have been going to West End musical theatre for years and in fact saw the original version of Starlight in London when it first opened. However the German version of Starlight which by the way holds the record for the longest running musical in one venue, a staggering 25 years, is by far and away the best musical production I have ever seen. The set is epic being within a purpose built auditorium with moving bridges and three tiers of 'track' which weaves in and out of the audience. If you can get seats for the pit then do it. Your chair revolves 360 degrees and you can follow the action right around the theatre. Costume and sets help to make a great show good, but what makes a good show great is the cast and what a stunning performers. No shortage of high octane tricks and the whole thing is sung live which leaves you wondering how they manage to catch a breath. The music is live too and the orchestra do make a brief appearance to prove it. Though many of the cast are in fact British the show is sung in German. Do not be put off by this. Even if you don't know the show you will still be able to follow the storyline. New music was added this year to celebrate its 25th year in Bochum which adds a new dynamic and in fact makes the show flow even more. I have seen it six times now and frankly it just gets better for me every time. So where is Bochum? Its in the Rhur valley close to Dusseldorf and convenient for Cologne and Essen and some of the smaller towns. Its a great weekend away and well worth the money. I live in the North of England and trip to Bochum is probably on a par with a trip to London... well worth the effort and promise you will not be disappointed.
Traveled from Berlin on the ICE for the day to see Starlight Express. It was a long day but totally worth it. The show is in German but easy enough to understand for a non-German speaker. This is a one-of-a-kind show and if you are a theater lover, worth the effort.
This is a true 5 Star show in a 5 Star venue. I have seen the show in London twice but the Bochum version beats it hands down because the place was built for the show. Everyone has an excellent viewing point and the seats are great [as is the air-conditioning and sound system]. I wish British entrepreneurs could see how you can put on a top quality show at sensible prices and even more sensible prices for food and drink in the theatre bars which are less than half the UK prices.
If your a musical lover or enjoy the theatre this is defiantly a must see despite the whole show is sang in german its still amazing and after a while you dont even notice! Amazing cast and venue the programme is also impressive worth getting for a souvenir!!
First of all. It's in german, so don't go there if you like to understand the song lines. If you like to see a great show, than the text doesn't matter...I was spoiled from the musicals in Hamburg, where I got both times great seats at the very last minute (and cheaper as booking it in advance)Here I was really, really lucky. Because I arrived there in the evening (on a Wednesday!!!) and I got the very last seat in the audience and it was on the highest balconie, which was a kind of a dissappointment, but at least I got a seat.So if you like to have a good seat book it in advance, even if you have to pay a little more (there are always pre-booking-fees in the internet)
