The whole complex in which this museum is situated is interesting. The museum features award winning design from cutlery to helicopters. Great layout. explanations are in english as well as German. Eclectic array of objects. Very interesting. We enjoyed it a lot.

Possibly the best part of the museum is the way the exhibits themselves have been arranged--it's a great example of excellent design. There's the frame of a car hanging from the ceiling, among other things.

Amazing collection of items including cars, white goods, shower accessories, medical equipment, buggies, rucksacks, chairs, domestic appliances, computer equipment, bikes, clothes, a gyrocopter, to name just some of the groups of items. If its won a design prize ever in the world its somewhere is in this museum. The power plant the items are displayed in is in itself fantastic to see, its internal machinery is still in situ with the design items placed in many cases in amongst the machinery. The interpretation is superb and everything is labelled and detailed in both German and English. Allow at least two to three hours to go through it. Its got a small café inside as well.

The museum is incorporated into the old power house of the large Zollverein coal mine. Rusty boilers and pipes mingle with smartly designed products from all areas of life. Bicycles, clothes, laboratory instruments, cooking utensils etc etc. All are best in their class and many have received special prizes. You walk through four floors (I think). Outside is the large industrial complex of the mine, a world heritage, so there is lots more to do. You reach the site via tram 107 from Essen Hauptbahnhof.

What's interesting about this museum are less the items on display, namely examples of good contemporary industrial design, but the venue itself and the exhibition concept. In fact, the Red dot museum is located in the power plant of the coal work Zeche Zollverein, which has been conserved as such. Thus, you find exhibits, that is design products, more or less scattered around in a huge three or four storey high industrial structure with all its steel pipes, concrete pillars and metal stairways. A stunning experience.

It is the setting rather than the collection that makes the visit an incredible experience. The contrast between the design artifacts scattered in a cokes mine is just stunning.

The enormous Bauhaus style building has been turned into a huge display area for exhibits that are considered the best designs. The interior has been designed by Norman Foster and is vast; it's like a huge exhibition of sculpture. I was expecting more furniture - for me there were far too many electronic gadgets, shower heads and door handles - so I was a bit disappointed. For somewhere so well designed I thought the toilets were particularly well hidden and I only found one for men and one for women. I thought the shop could have sold a few more of the smaller items that were in the exhibition as I would have liked to buy a small souvenir.

Do you like Design? In this old Boilerroom is all that is NOW Beautifull. The Audi chassis out of Aluminum, pens, posters, Fridges, Lamps, bikes. All that is Nice and Design is in this building! only € 8 or visit the Musuem in Singapore :-)

I really enjoyed this museum more than I have anticipated. It was a surprisingly refreshing break from the many history and art museums that I have visited during my trip to Western Germany. This museum focused on the artistic aspect of functional design. It is pretty neat to see these modern designs against the weathered interior of the coal mine. And there is a lot to see! If you are into technology or interior decorating, this place is a must! The labels are both in English and German. Many of the items are common-place, however, seeing them behind glass, gets you to focus on the innovative design concept behind each one. There were some very futuristic-like items too. I felt like I was window shopping, and making a mental wish list of things I would like to own someday!

All the winners of the design awards are exposed here in the old mine.A greater contrast is nit possible. To visit this museum is a must.It is situated on the site of the Zollverein Coal Mine in Essen.

Four floors of every day objects designed in a really pleasant way. Gave us lots of ideas for remodeling.
