This place has some fine art. I like the Piet Mondrian the most but the Franz Marc Horses were also great. An excellent place to visit, followed by Süd Rock for a couple of drink. Definitely a must see!
The Volkwang Museum has an amazing collection of contemporary art in an appealing setting. A MUST!I especially enjoyed seeing the latest special exhibition on Japonism, the effects of Japanese art on French/European artist in the lat 19th and early 20th century...The catalogue is a treasure trove!
We visited the Japanese Inspiration exhibit and really enjoyed it. The audio guide and excellent book do a great job of explaining the subtle inspirations. AND the permanent collection is impressive. What a great museum building and collection. We will go again!
Visited the Inspiration Japan exhibition with works of Van Gogh, Monet and Gaugain. The museum offers a great diversity of contemporary and recent (till 1850) art works. However the photo exhibition on the existence/start of life, Deposit, by Yann Mingard was even better. The museum building is excellent and offers nice opportunities for visiting a modern style building combined with modern arts.
The very gourgeous museum I like. Now you can visit the unique exhibition of japanese influence which is soooo fantastic. The exhibition which you can visit all time is very famouse too, especially in Moskow. This is a dreem comming true to visit this museum!
A very nice exhibtion, lots of well known paintings put in a whole new context! We have visited the museum several times and all the temporary exhibitions were worth it. It is also very interesting to take the time and walk through the permanent exhibition...even though that might be a little too much at a time after taking in the Japanese impressions...see it for yourself!
It is still available - worth to see - up to January 2015. Museum is impressive and well organize, restaurant is very expensive.
We saw the Monet, Gauguin, van Gogh exhibition and it was great. Big rooms, plenty of light and lounges to sit on. The only criticism would be the staff were a bit grumpy and not enough seating in the cafe.
This amazing exhibit is a collection of impressionist art ( from museums worldwide) presented next to the Japanese works that influenced or inspired it. The Japanese woodblock prints are spectacular especially in comparison or contrast to the impressionist paintings. A very creative and insightful exhibit. The exhibit runs until January 18, 2015. It is worth a trip to Essen to enjoy. It was the highlight of our visit.
It was a nice visit The place is well maintained and arranged Very educational The bookstores and online library are something i loved
I really liked the small enclosed spaces used for sculptures that were surrounded by the building. The exhibits were well curated. One on advertising was very interesting. The museum is small though. Great gift shop with a number of books in English. There is a very nice pedestrian bridge serving the park across the street and the neighborhood behind the museum.
I visited with 2 teenagers and could keep them interested for 1 1/2 hours. The pre-1960 partof modern aert is very good, and includes some nice works by American abstract expressionists. The collection of contemporary art is more modest.
Brand new, well designed museum: lots of light, Bauhaus- type style. Quite a good permanent collection, often combined with major temporary exhibitions. A "must visit" in Essen.
Le Monde called it "the most beautiful museum in the world" and meant the building by David Chipperfield which indeed is perfect for a pleasant art experience. The string of interconnected pavillons are light and light-flooded, bridge inside and outside by opening the perspective to green interior courtyards and the town outside, and make you discover the collection quite effortless in a pleasant stroll. And what a collection they have: The 19th century is represented by a great collection of French and German artists, the contemporary 20th and 21st century mainly by German artists. Amongst the many top names and pictures I personally liked in particular the following: Lise with the parapluie by Auguste Renoir, Claude Monnet's Cathedral of Rouen in mist, a small painting by Manet called "the granate", the portrait of 16 year-old Armand Roulin by Van Gogh, a great "horse against landscape" by Franz Marc and a wonderful "concentrated" view of the Promenade des Anglais in Nice by Max Ernst (?). There are also great sculptures by Rodin, Maillol and a stunning fountain by Belgian artist Georges Minne. At the moment of my visit, they had a stunning temporary exhibition of sculptures by Thomas Schuette. The large and excellent collection reveals sometimes surprising cross references. For example the pictures by the Swiss Hodler and the Norvegian Munch are so similar in colours, tones and even subject that one may think that they were painted by the same person. Oh, and then they do have a portrait painted by Miro. Incredible. I always thought that he could only do colourful abstracts which he would call star with woman and bird, or was it bird, woman and star?
Nice examples of some of the Master's - Monet, Picasso etc. Galleries are large with high ceilings and well lit, so good for viewing. I was there mid-day and very few other people were there so it was pleasant to view in quiet. Definitely worth getting audio tour from museum.
