The Nazi Party Rally Grounds is said to be one of the "must see" places in Nuremberg and after visiting it, I can completely agree! We had an English speaking guide who explained with great detail what went on there in the mid 1930's and after the tour we walk around these grounds. It was cold, dark, overcast day as we walked where more than a million people came each year from 1933 - 1938 to celebrate the rising power of the National Socialist Party. If in the area, its a must see!
It's a complete experience to known further about the history of the National-Socialist Party, with audio in many languages and different ways to show what happened in Nuremberg, Germany and Europe. However, it takes place in a historic building, where Hitler gave some of his most famous speeches, and maybe the exhibition which takes place there nowadays could be designed in a way that this old building was shown a little bit more, embracing some references to its elements.
This is the place you have seen so many times in the WWII documentaries and now you can say, "I went there". Incredible to see how well it was built and the massive scale of it.
The Former Nazi Party Rally Grounds is said to be about eleven square kilometers in size and exactly what the ultimate plan for this historic site will be remains uncertain. I paid a couple of euros at the information desk at the Documentation Centre for an English language map & guide entitled "Former Nazi Party Rally Grounds" that was most helpful to me as I went on a self-guided walk around these grounds. One can enter the Congress Call Courtyard midway along the sidewalk adjoining Dutzendteich Lake. There are a couple of historic markers in German & English in the center of this courtyard and along the self-guided tour route that I followed. One can walk along the Great Street which was intended to be the main marching street & central axis of the grounds. One can walk around Zeppelin Field to appreciate the size of this parade ground where the staged propaganda productions like the Dome of Light were held. One can walk around(at your own risk as posted on multiple signs!) the Zeppelin Grandstand that now has little resemblance to the Pergamon Altar that it was modeled after. Other less frequently visited components of this complex include Luitpold Grove(at the site of the destroyed Luitpold Hall), Transformer Station & Workers' Accommodation & SS Barracks. The cold, dark & overcast day that I walked around here captured the unease I experienced walking around these grounds where nearly one million people came each year from 1933 through 1938 to showcase the rising power of the National Socialist Party.
This place is huge and it pays to have a guided tour so that you understand just what the Nazi party did in the 1930s and the lead up to the second world war.Had Hitler finished this it would have been unbelievable and one can understand just how the people were duped by this regime. One wonders just how much slave labour was even used in building this part?
There is no question that this is a dark place in the time of the city. I just had to walk and wonder at what people were thinking. Probably, not to much different than today. Anything can be justified in your own mind. What I think is the true story is how the people have survived and overcome there past. This is seen in the thriving town and the wonderful people I met there. Everyone was so friendly. Don't be afraid to get out in this town and venture on your own. I did, and am so glad! That being said, the magnitude of this edifice is worth seeing. But, if you are like me, just stroll along the town streets and enjoy how everything is new and fresh.
Worth walking around after hearing about the area in the documentation centre. The scale needs to be seen to be believed. Hard to imagine the size of the place had it been finished. Everything is on a massive scale.
Walked part of this enormous stadium where Hitler would speak to the multitudes. He would enter from the back onto a stage taht would then be illuminated with search lights forming an arch over him.Charisma is just that and we must always be aware of the words behind the charisma.
Museum out together by Germans, nuremburgans, for the world. Extremely well organized, extremely informative and helps one understand how war begins. You need 3 hours plus. We had two hours. Not enough time.
Very unsettling and takes time to understand what occurred so many years ago. The area is so vast, I'm glad we had a car to move around it.
