Well presented Timber Museum. Of the four museums in Schiltach, this was the most interesting. Easily accessible from the town, right along the river. The raftsman are an interesting concept, unusual to Americans. Worth the vist!
"Flössermuseum" This is an interesting little museum located by the Kinzig river in Schiltach.I do recommend this museum, it is really interesting. When I was there, in summer 2012, the entrance was free, although donations are accepted. (And there is a small charge, 1 Euro as I remember, for a leaflet with an English translation of the written information.)The museum has several parts. One is the real sawmill on this spot. It's there, but it was not running when I was there. It was interesting to see anyway. One part of the museum is an exhibition related to forest and wood and the use of wood in general.Another part is related to tannery. The tanneries needed a water supply so they were located by the river. The tannery quarters of Schiltach are located close by, also by the river Kinzig. And, the "Flössermuseum", the rafting exhibition, telling about the timber rafting in Schiltachand in the Kinzig river. The rafting of timber from the forests of Schwarzwald, on the Kinzig river, as far as the Rhinewas an important business and source of economy in Schiltach, and the men that dared the wild river in order to transport the important timber cargo to the buyers, were skilled and respected workers and much looked up to.Like loggers are everywhere I think. This exhibition tells that interesting story. For someone that comes from a part of Europe where timber rafting was practiced until the late sixties, it came as a surprise to find this museum in Schwarzwald. The museum is highly recommended and not to be missed in Schiltach.
