The tourist moloch down at the parking space is gruesome for all who ar not into the "Original Black Forest Cuckoo Clock" kitsch, but as soon as you move away from that, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking scenery.Hiking up to the top of the Hornisgrinde (~1160 m above sea level) is worth the effort, the paths are well-kept and the view from the top is amazing. There also is a "Hochmoor" on the flat part of the mountain top, a rare natural phenomenon which can be accessed over wooden paths. If you're lucky, you'll get to see some very rare animals there. So escape from the cuckoo clocks and get some real Black Forest experience! :D
We visited this area in December we did'nt go for a walk around the lake due to snow but what we could see looked lovely, there is ski- ing, shops hotel and from what we where told fabulous walks around the lake.
I was surprised at how small the lake was when I saw it first. But what it lacks in size, it covers up in beauty. We visited it on a rainy afternoon and the clouds were floating over the area; giving it a surreal look. I wish I took a walk around the lake but it was cold and too foggy for that.We ate at the restaurant nearby and the food was good. The souvenir shop is excellent.
Lake Mummelsee outside Baden Baden, Germay is like a sheet of glass. It is so still that you feel totally at peace.
We started our journey through the Black Forest from Offenburg at 150m elevation and when we reached Lake Mummelsee the elevation was little higher than 1000m. The temperature dropped from 20 deg C to 10 deg C. The roads were in excellent condition and made the driving very comfortable. Finding a lake at this height is a nice surprise (if your trip was not planned specially to go to the lake) but the water color was more toward being black not blue. There are few restaurants and cafes in the place with ample car parking space. In my opinion driving through this path is very enjoyable but there is nothing special about the lake.
Our tour group rode a bus through the Black Forest to this lake from Baden Baden in August 2014. It was a holiday weekend and the place was packed with tourists, but the restaurant had a large room reserved for us and the chef demonstrated how to make Black Forest Cake. Then they served a big slice for everyone. Nice drive. Pretty lake. Delicious cake.
A longish drive along the Schwarzwald hohestrasse brings you to Mummelsee, a little lake with walks and boats. There's one giant tourist shop, a large and rather expensive hotel restaurant, and that's about it, really.
One very long shop selling souvenirs and an expensive restaurant, with shop selling souvenirs. Not much else to say!
Brilliant lake with restaurant. Lots of walks and hikes of different lengths. Stunning views over the lake and countryside. Pedal boots on the lake.
I probably wouldn't have drove here for the day but is definitely worth a stop here if you drive by. Walk around in 20 mins but pretty when the sun is shining.
This lake is a about an hour from Baden-Baden and worth the trip provided you know the story around its existence.Nevertheless its is place touristy with lots of buses visiting. The excursion is particularly worth on a hot day as the temperature is alway a few degrees lower than in the city. Buy some bread and the famous Black Forest Ham and have a piece of Black Forest Cake in the Restaurant. The ride to the lake is the best of the trip with beautiful vistas. You may wish to continue on the B 500 up to Freudenstadt with one the largest market squares in Germany.
It is a bit out of the way to the city, through winding road. It was a weekend summer, so parking can be a bit hard to find. You can rent pedal boats or walk around the lake, but the lake is not big. We had the Black Forest cake that made up for the disappointing visit.
the road by bus to the lake was more interesting than the lake. there are hiking trails around area that I think more interesting. The shops around the lake are interesting. the whole thing is worth2-3 hours. the bus schedule from Baden baden August platz is tricky
Breathtaking views. Photo ops left and right. Enjoyed the walk around the lake and of course had to have some black forest cake.
Very picturesque location, where you can eat & take a walk around the See.... if you're feeling that energetic you can hire a pedal boatPerfect for some souvenirs, in fact we got caught by a lady selling perfume, creams etc & parted with 25 euros.....
