I'd like to share my feeling for this place because it's simply amazing....I was born in Varese and I spent a lot of time up there especially when you desire recover yourself... From up there you have a superb view and in a clear day you are able to see Milan. It's a Mystical place for me.
It's quite a walk but worthwhile! Also beautifull views! And go to Al Borducan! Lovely food and the Elixer Borducan is delicious. But don't drink too much, you have to walk down again.
it s my opinion that everybody ld visit this place. when i was a baby i started to visit these monuments and everytime it s something new
I consider this a must. Unesco Heritage, a walk along 16th century chapels, original well preserved wooden sculptures representing the last days of Jesus. A real treasure. On top the village is fine, restaurants and bars slightly overpriced.
Only fifty kilometers from Milan this monument, recognized world heritage site by UNESCO, gives you a full immersion into the Italian tradition. In the XVI century popular devotion led to build many sites where the last steps of Jesus where reconstructed with creativity. Sacro Monte over Varese allows you a sight over hundreds of kilometers in the surrounding mountains up to Switzerland on one side and the Appennini mountain chain looking towards south. The little village built on top of the Sacro Monte gives you a glimpse into history. A suggestion: visit it on a clear evening and stay for a dinner in one of the small restaurants uphill. Everything is near and distances are short. So leave from Milan at 6 during spring and you will sit in your restaurant before 7.30 at sunset.
Interesting capelli strung along a hiking route. Wooded hillside, nice views from top. Old walls & gates, even red Poste Italia box on an old Villa wall made for good photos.
Liked: Nice views. Not an easy walk, but good when it is not raining. Disliked: most of the way the trees and buildings are hiding the view
It was one of my best experiences of the trip. The journey to the top of the mountain and the walk down seeing all of the Biblical representations of Jesus Christ. Would definitely like to visit again one day. Luckily, it was not raining when I was there in mid-November.
It's a long pilgrimage to the top but each chapel has interesting tableaus to study. At the top luttle narrow passages provide exciting routes to new discoveries of the old Italy. Full of history and the sacred with good restaurants in which to stop for a glass of wine and to plan the next visit.
We had a "social" dinner there and it was a very welcoming place, great view, great food, very friendly staff, great dessert!
I loved the walk up through all the chapels, if you prefer, you can walk from the top of the mountain down, it might be a little easier
Usually if something is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, then it is worth seeing. Sacro Monte was worth seeing. It is a Roman Catholic devotional complex dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. The project began in 1583 and involves about 20 chapels that are positioned on the slopes of the mountain along a trail. It was a pleasant stroll looking at the chapels and the lovely artwork contained within. The walk down the path to the little town of Orta San Giulio is a delightful stroll. And something to eat and a cappuccino makes it all the better.
I didnt even know where i go. I was just curious about the sights and these didnt disapoint me. However it is ofcourse Santcuario - holy place for pilgrims.
Walking trails and the 'pilgrimage' route are fantastic. It can be hard work as it is walking up a mountain side however a funicular railway runs at weekends and special events and there is a car park for easy car access from Varese. The village of Santa Maria is unique , quirky and very interesting with high class hotels and restaurants. The interior of the church in the village is amazing. From the car park level there is a lift to take you to the church if required making the mountainside accessible to all
This place Is amazing. Esp.for ppl who love to go hiking. Start from the 1st chapel all the way to the last one on top of the mountain is awesome. But if you don't want to do that, you can go directly to the top with your private vehicle or public bus.
