It's amazing what love of your work will allow you to do. Carving all these figures and portraits by hand, freely; it's fantastic. This is one thing that you can't miss seeing.
The beautiful city of Pizzo has few attractions but the Piedegrotta Church was a nice way to kill an hour or so. It was easy to find, reasonably priced and uncrowded. You walk down to the beautiful beach and there you enter a grotto filled with statues carved out of stone. Everyone from Jesus, Mary and The 3 Wise Men to Pope John Paul II & JFK were in there. Although not very big and we spent only about 30 mins. inside, it was a nice way to cool off and enjoy the hard work done by a father, then his son, to create a small but appealing attraction. I would recommend that if you are staying in Pizzo or close to it a visit would be worthwhile, just don't plan an entire day around it.
This would not normally figure on my list of things to do but I am glad I chose this place. Small but moving. Easy to get to with fairly good parking at the top of the hill. Well worth a visit as you will not take up much of your day with this wonderful place.
As stated in previous reviews this is a bit off the beaten trackkbut well worth a visit. It is truly amazing what has been done and it is beautifully situated. It is not expensive to visit.
Visited here on last day of our trip to South Italy and must say wish we had come earlier. Not only is the cave of hand carved statues in itself a wonderful sight and a truly amazing place to be but within a stones throw is a small sandy cove with sparkling clean water. It was quiet when we came in Oct but we'll worth a visit as the man made enclosed beach has to be seen as much as the church inside the cavern
We had some trouble finding this, but it just north of the city of Pizzo, on the beach. Amazing, quirky and heartfelt hidden sculptures.
This is definitely worth a visit. A long flight of steps will take you down to this cave/church with amazing view of the sea which is beautiful. We paid only around EUR1.50 to go inside this cave which is full of man-carved statues from sailors who survived a shipwreck. Quite unique and not to be missed!
I really enjoyed this "cool" (literally in a cool cave) sight. We didn't think we would find it and then boom...we saw the cars parked and manuevered down. The young man taking the fee was very helpful. He was skeptical that the statutes were really carved by the sailors from the shipwreck but it's possible.....in any event, very unique and I'm glad we saw it (Grazie to Cheryle!). Wish we could have tried the seafood restaurant too! Instead we ate Grande Firme which was pretty tastey!
Very quaint and I really enjoyed it especially the nativity in the grotto but roads are quite hairy in these parts so it may be difficult unless you are staying quite close by.
You would not know this ancient church is here, but you really should pop by and take a look, amazing statues and scenes carved into the rocks. Visiting is very serene and relaxing.
Found this intriguing little gem today while walking on the empty beach.well worth exploring with a good camera and flash. The work inside is a true representation of dedication and skill.
loved the history of this place. it is incredibly scenic. we went to the beach that day, visited the church, and ate at the little cafe up from the beach. then we walked home and took in the gorgeous scenery. What's not to like? That's a perfect day...
Stunning church carved in volcanic stone, overlooking a beautiful beach with clear water. breathtaking sunsets with views over Stromboli volcano island.
it was very interesting to see the statues curved on the stone.the fee is smallthe people too many
although reaching the Church is not prorpio comfortable, I assure you that once you arrive, you will be rewarded by the sight that you will see, exposed the beauty of the statues of tuff, but if you really want to enchant then go at dusk, sunset light will have an effect by dreamPS forgive my englishanche se arrivare alla chiesetta non è prorpio comodo,vi assicuro che una volta arrivati, sarete ricompensati dallo spettacolo che vedrete, impressionate la bellezza delle statue di tufo,ma se proprio volete incantarvi allora andateci al crepuscolo,la luce del tramonto avrà un effetto da sogno
