To reach the dam you have to go uphill in a beautiful road. When you get to the dam there's a parking lot, and from there you can walk a little to a small chapel, a place from where you can see the dam and some informative sings.On the way from the parking lot to the dam, there are several small flags with the name and the age of all the children that died that day (this was very touching).Also they have some guided tours that last almost two hours, and they go 3-4 times a day, but the operation hours change during the year, so better check on the website before going.

Visit this place it's something really touching and it's something to do to remember all people died here. I knew the history of this tragic disaster, but only once arrived I really understood the big catastrophy happened here...it's a place to think about life and our fragility.

We passed there 59 years ago when we were on our honeymoon. Each time I pass, I cry for the sadness and loss of that terrible day in 1963

The Diga del Vayont was built in the early 1960s to create hydro-electric energy. However, the mountain on the south side of the Vayont valley, Monte Toc, was unstable. This unstability became manifest during the test period in which the lake was filled stepwise, but no precautions were taken. On 9 October 1963, an enormous landslide shifted into the lake and overflooded the neighbouring villages including Erto and Casso, and caused a massive overflooding of the dam. Thister thundered downwards into the Piave valley, where it destroyed the village of Longarone. There were some 1,850 casualties and thousands of people lost all their possessions. Nowadays, one can drive up the mountain and park next to the valley that now has been filled up with debris. The dam is still there, and in high season tickets can be bought for a walk over the "corona", the top of the dam. Impressive is a series of 470 small banners commemorating all children that lost their lives that night. Many survivors were housed in the newly built village of Vajont some 40km to the southeast - a sinister place to be exiled to when you were lucky enough to survive the flood. Next to the dam, there is a small (paid!) parking lot, cafeteria, and information stand where documentation on the disaster can be bought.

L'emblema dell'Italia: una grande opera, faraonica, all'epoca tra le più alte al mondo, gestita in un modo assurdo. è impressionante vedere quanta montagna sia caduta dal monte "toc" ed è ancora più impressionante immaginare quanta acqua ci fosse in quel bacino che quel giorno inondò Longarone. Da vedere, in silenzio, in un giorno d'autunno...per riflettere!!

Fa pensare nel vederla tutto ciò che è accaduto...il disastro....la ricostruzione...punto di passaggio per andare verso il Friuli. ..impressionante la montagna da dove è caduta la frana

La storia già lascia frastornati e amareggiati, trovarsi qui, nel punto esatto, è ancor più suggestivo e suggerisce un religioso silenzio nella contemplazione del posto. Fa venire i brividi se ci si immedesima negli istanti della tragedia. Consiglio anche una visita alla città di Longarone, rende ancor più partecipi della storia.

Impressionante la storia. Praticamente un monte franato ed entrato nel bacino della diga. C'era anche un signore che con un chioschetto e 4-5 plastici del prima-dopo-durante alla Bruno Vespa ci ha spiegato tutto in modo chiarissimo. Non ci tenevo ad andarci, credevo fosse una diga mal costruita e basta (invece la diga ha retto all'esondazione...) ma appena arrivato ho visto l'altezza delle gole di roccia subito dopo la diga, le lapidi in memoria dei caduti... e poi quando ho capito bene la storia. Sono rimasto veramente impressionato.

Parlarne e vederlo di persona sono due cose totalmente diverse... c'è un silenzio esasperante che affoga nelle vallate dove si consumò quella terribile tragedia... non ci sono parole per descrivere un posto del genere, non ci sono parole e basta. la voce sparisce e viene un nodo in gola esagerato. Emozionante davvero, la pelle d'oca è inevitabile e l'unico pensiero va a quelle povere persone innocenti che hanno perso la vita per lo sbaglio di qualcuno.

visitate anche la chiesa nuova a Longarone, che conserva tutto quanto è rimasto della vecchia chiesa.

Come non vedere questo posto, un vero pellegrinaggio laico nei luoghi dove la tragedia ambientale causata dall'avidità dell'uomo ha lasciato i segni più evidenti e dolorosi. Leggere e capire la storia del Vajont è determinante per capire il mondo odierno e per riflettere sul confine tra dignità, avidità, umanità...Per anni la diga è stata nascosta, a Longarone facevano persino fatica a dare indicazioni sulla strada. Ma visitate questo monumento.

se nn la si vede di persona nn ci si rende conto della tragedia che ha provocato...Percorrere il vialetto che porta alla diga, con a sinistra la staccionata cn scritti i nomi di tutti i bimbi scomparsi, fa venire i brividi

Sono stato con la mia compagnia alla diga del vajont. Pensando a quanto accaduto lo scenario fa' rabbrividire. Siamo stati sul coronamento e poi abbiamo fatto un giro con una guida. È stato un ottimo giro. Per quanto riguarda il parcheggio quanto sono arrivato ho chiesto informazioni x il parcheggio e mi hanno detto che se volevo si poteva parcheggiare 50 metri più avanti senza pagare. Sa vedere e se volete risparmiare sul parcheggio guardate bene
