My sister and husband were married here and it was fantastic, the service was lovely and the decor speaks for itself in pictures. When we exited the building there was a crowd waiting to cheer for the newlyweds in the courtyard. Beautiful!
This was a great medieval hall and the staff were wonderful. Antonio climbed with us to the top of the tower and the poor man has to do this with each group of visitors always with a smile and clear explanations of what we are seeing. Off season and off the beaten track, this is a well maintained site
great situation for a drink and lunchtime meal/snack. Can I beat a place with an atmosphere and historic setting...no! It's perfect.
Volterra is well worth at least a day trip and the main piazza is quite impressive.. The town is walkable and has been an important center since Etruscan times.
It is just gorgeous, it amazes me to walk on stone that people walked on before the birth of Christ. Just awesome.
The exhibition which I have seen it this year, it will be also in 2015. It was an amazing idea how it was made. It is not just an artist involved, bat a group of artists and it is displayed in all the museums and important building in the city of Volterra. Very nice idea, very nice concept. If you like art, spend a day or at least half day and visit it, if you are there! Thank you very much to the staff of Palazzo dei Priori for their kindly way to be and for their help.
Nice piazza with 2-3 places to sit and sip a glass of Super Tuscan, or have a meal. Great at night. Be sure to try and spot the tower with the little pig way up high.
We got married at the fabulous Palazzo dei Priori on 4 July 2014. It all started with me falling in love with a picture of the ceremony room online - further research only paved the way to more perfection and from there it was a short step to convincing my fiancé and family that an Italian wedding was the way forward! Luckily they agreed and my dream came true. The Palazzo is one of the oldest civil buildings in Tuscany and it does not disappoint. Impressive from the outside and set in a lovely square, it is a majestic centre point of the charming town of Volterra. With the help of my wedding planner (Annie Adair of Tuscan Tours - highly recommended) we booked the hall and arranged everything without much hassle. The paperwork requirements changed this year so they were really keen to make sure all was in order. We had to visit a few days before the wedding to sign a couple of bits but again, with Annie's help, no problem. Gianni the celebrant was new to the role - we were his first wedding! But he did a fabulous job and even gave us a present from the city after the ceremony. There isn't a sound system to use so if you're bringing music, you need something to play it on. You can also arrange a permit to drive into the town during normally prohibited hours (polizia municipale deal with this but Annie helped out once again). Confetti is allowed outside but biodegradable or petals should be used out of respect for the town. We used lavender. Volterra and it's amazing places and people will stay with us forever - thanks for making our wedding so special.
We were just driving around Tuscany when we happened upon Volterra--a gem hidden in the hills of Tuscany. The medieval town is easy to walk around and meanders through side streets filled with shops of all types. We throughly enjoyed our brief stay in the town and also discovered a state prison near one of the entrances. When I walked in accidently with a large camera I was given that look most of know that communicated "what are you doing in here?" We actually found a free two hour parking area on the side closest to Osteria La Pace bar/restaurant.
This medieval building is the earliest surviving Town Hall in Tuscany is has an unusual 5 sides tower and great views from the top floor. he Council room was redecorated by the Florentines when they sacked and occupied the city in the renaissance. The exterior and foyer have plaques of the coat of arms of the various Florentine overlords
My little family stumbled upon this fun experience. It was fun to see the actual town hall that is still used today and then to get to climb to the top of the tower to were the actual bell is was the icing on the cake! The tickets were 3,50 euro per adult, kids were free. The kids enjoyed seeing the bells that we have been hearing all the time! Fun day, different from all the churches and museums we have been seeing.
For a couple of euros we saw some historical exhibition rooms and climbed the tower, from which there were some fantastic views over the town and the surrounds, made better by the sunny weather at the time. Thoroughly recommend the climb - quite easy provided you have reasonable mobility.
This building is a piece of living history. The stones from which it is built have witnessed centuries of civic life, military conflict, celebrations in the piazza, as generations have lived and died in its shadow. Just a glance at the shields and heraldry displayed on its walls both inside and out is testament to the many families who have played a part in Volterra's history, from medieval times until the present.
Volterra is a pearl. Walking across Piazza dei Priori is really suggestive. But if you have the chance to go on the top of the Priori Palace, you will enjoy a terrific view not only of Volterra, but of Tuscany. We had to wait 20 minutes during the Red Night (a local event organized each year in September, where all the touristic attractions are open and free at night), but the view and the atmosphere created by music played in the square were priceless! The main room is really nice too: walls are completely decorated and you really feel that decisions were taken there!!! Steps are irregular, so use comfortable shoes.
Palazzo dei Priori has a small exhibition, consisting of a couple of council rooms, a floor given to artifacts related to the history of the town (including a couple of nice models), and access to the bell tower, with not sweeping but still pretty good vistas over the town and countryside. If you have enough time to spend in Volterra, it is worth a visit.
