A tiny jewel decorated with amazingly ancient mosaics, something unique to be found only in Ravenna. There is a combo ticket including other sites, all worth seeing and within walking distance from each other ... It's even very pleasant to stroll around in a place and meet locals who are very friendly and not burnt out because they see too many tourists :-)))

Done miss this small jewel. Even if you just look at the alabaster windows, it would be worth visiting. It is right behind the Basilica and part of the same property.

This building is in the same complex as the Basilica di San Vitale and Museo Nazionale and houses more muted mosaics than those in the basilica. The mosaics in Galla Placidia are the oldest in Ravenna. The Galla Placidia was constructed for Galla Placidia who was the half-sister of Emperor Honorius who intiated construction of many of Ravenna's grandest buildings.

very nice setting, need to know the story behind it in order to appreciate it in full, very fast visit (time-limited stay in it), logical continuation of the visit to San Vitale, also here splendid mosaics, if you travel in this area Ravenna is a logical stop and the combination San Vitale / Mausoleo di Galla Placidia becomes a must

This mausoleo is a small, intimate place where you feel that you are just next to truly amazing mosaics which seem contemporary -- but then you realize that these are more than 1400 years old! Amazing artistry. Remarkable and evocative images. Gorgeous symbolism if you wish to contemplate symbols and allegories, but simply wonderful beauty if you don't want to think that much, too! A MUST SEE in Ravenna .... or in Italy.

The Mausoleo is small and a little claustrophobic, but the mosaics are so incredible that one must stay inside and really enjoy them. Galla Placidia was some lady and it is worth reading about her in the guide books

This mausoleum is a pure pleasure for the eyes. The mosaics covering the walls and ceilings are real masterpieces, very colourful and fresh as if they were made recently. If you have the chance to visit the place alone, take a moment to reflect upon the creativity and the genius of mankind of which this place is a great example.

Located in the courtyard behind San Vitale, the Mausoleo di Galla Placida is less well-known than the basilica, but in many ways offers a more direct experience of the famous mosaics. This is a restful, intimate space where it is possible to appreciate the artistry of the anonymous craftsmen up close. The alabaster windows cast a magical light over the deep-blue tile backgrounds, which marry intricate geometric patterns with imaginative pictorial images of St. Lawrence and his iconic grill, and Christ as the Good Shepherd. These are among the oldest mosaics in Ravenna, dating from the late Roman period, and 95% of them are originals. Entrance is restricted to only a handful of people at a time, allowing the viewer to experience a rare connection to this sacred space. You'll linger well after your allotted time has expired.

Oldest and most precious mosaics, prior to 450 AD. In astounding condition, with gorgeous blue starry ceiling. These, and the ones in Basilia di San Vitale, are amazing, and considering they average 1500 years old, quite astounding.

To stand in the glow of the light filtered by the alabaster windows and see the beautiful mosaics it seems impossible that man created this. Sadly it can become crowded and the custodian will try to limit your time to absorb the wonder of this place.

The small size of this place belies its impact. The colours, the images are wonderful to contemplate. It is overshadowed by the larger basilica nearby but is wonderful in its own right.

Small but elaborate and incredibly well-preserved Byzantine-era mosaics, just at the rear of Basilica di San Vitale. Make sure you buy the all-in-one ticket.

Galla Placida was the sister of the last emperor of Rome. The colors are gorgeous and the mosaics in the mausoleum shine still these many centuries since they were laid. Well worth the visit.

It was amazing to stand in that little chapel and know that the mosaics, belonging to the late Roman period, were made at a time when England was sliding into the Dark Ages. The techniques are stunning - so carefully done that one has an impression of tapestries on the walls. And plenty of time just to stand and gaze without feeling rushed.
