Make sure to go for a cross-country trip while in Oslo. You can rent skis or bring your own. Take the tram to Frognerseteren station on Line 1. You can also rent downhill equipment at the Oslo Vinterpark close by - check it out. Just 30 min form downtown and you are out in the wilderness.
Accessible within less than 30 minutes from the city center, Oslomarka offers so much in every season. Skiing, skating, walking, biking, hiking, fishing, climbing, or just a jog, or a cup of coffee in one of the cabins.
Oslo is lucky innits geograhical position between forest ang fjord. This gives visitors the double benefit of a forest walk in the morning and a boat trip on the fjord in the afternoon or at certain times of year a ski trip in the forest in the morning and a boat trip in the afternoon. Oslo must also be the only capital city whose geographical centre is in the surrounding forest! It is officially marked with a stone sculpture. Ask at the tourist office how to find the place. Its about 30 minutes walk from the nearest suburban railway station!
The very best thing about Oslo is that you can basically just enter the wilderness in some minutes. There are so many possibilites to escape from the city life in just a short time... Nordmarka, Frogneseteren, Ullevålseter, Sørkedalen, Sognsvann, Maridalen, Bogstad... and I could continue...Highly worth visiting for exploring and photograph the norwegian nature/wilderness, wild animals and the lovely scenery. All places are also perfect for exercises like hiking, cycling, jogging, skiing. Simply a unique place for both activity and rest!
The forests that surrounds Oslo is beautiful and very varied from the hilly and more open north to the more closed and with less people to the east. All of the forests in Oslo is easy to access with most communications. It's also a pretty good ski area in the north, still within city borders. It is said that Oslo is the only capital in the world that you can, with a car, reach either the sea or the forest within ten minutes ( outside the rush our that is :-) ). If you enjoy the outdoors as me, then a trip in the Oslo forests are a must. And the trip could vary from an hour to days. Bicycle, canoe, in winter skis, or even better feet only, and you cant be wrong... Have good trip.
Oslo marka is a very nice area for singles, couples and families. It gives plenty of opportunities. But you would have to love walking or bicycling. But if you do - wow! There are fishing opportunities (trout), picnic areas with open fire places, bathing (preferably during the summer months if you do not want to make a hole in the ice cover). Watching birds, flowers, breathing really fresh air and relax. The Oslo marka is a peaceful area. You can choose between foot paths or roads (gravel) without any motorized traffic.
You never walk alone, but it is relaxing although there are a lot of People around. Nice to relax at Ullevålsseter and walk to Frognerseteren-plan for a lunch.
Oslomarka is perfect for a walk, jogg, skiing or biking...depending on the season you visit. There are marked routes all over for ski, walk or biking. Be aware of that this is a popular place in the weekends especially. You soon forget that this area is just outside of a Oslo citys Buzz.
Treat for nature lovers, we thoroughly enjoyed walk on one of the trails. Due to short time we had on hand, did not get chance to try authentic forest restaurants. Probably summer is best time to visit these forest trails and dirt road.
Beautiful trails and great views if one goes further up. A great place to go for a morning or afternoon walk even as part of a busy workday.
I went there on a sunny Sunday for a cycling tour and really enjoyed the area. There are many different tours one can take, many beautiful lakes where people go swimming and a wide choice of charming authentic forest restaurants. There are also many prepared tracks for cross-country skiing in the winter and it is rather popular both as a training arena and for family activities. I see it as a wonderful way to spend a Sunday, both being active and enjoying the nature, so close to the heart of the city, but a completely different world.
It is hard for anyone outside Norway to believe that virtually every person in Oslo lives less than 15 minutes from a vast network of trails and dirt roads that are free, unencumbered, and well maintained. In winter, volunteers clear cross-country skiing trails, and in summer trees are marked to show official trails. Maps are available in most bookstores, and people you see in the woods are friendly and helpful.
It is a great activity to do with your kids, or just to spend time with friends to feel a little bit how is a Norwegian winter. If you have no skiing skills like me you will enjoy very much, to have some fun without worry to break a leg.It is very good too to feel how are the tradition of the families in Norway who go with their kids and have some good time near by a fire place.
Hiking in mountains, lakes, forest. Amazing landscapes !!Night in a cabin, if you love nature, do not hesitate ! So beautiful and peaceful !!
If you are so lucky, visiting Oslo, you have to be aware that in 20 - 30 minutes, you have mother nature at your freets. If u do not know better, at least go to Holmenkollen and Frognersæteren. From there the world is at your feet.
