A great atmoshere even with a heavy snowfall. The feeling of the castle life and also the great view creates an experience of medieval Slovenia. A great shop together with the ticket office and exhibitions waits you here in the magic city of Ptuj. A must if you come here ...
On a very sunny and warm afternoon end of September 2014 I attended the meeting of SMC party & president dr. Miro Cerar. Meeting was held in the main hall of the castle , nicely arranged and spacious . At the end of the meeting there was group photo before the entrance to the castle.
The views from the walk to and at the top of the castle are great. The costumes from the past are unusual and very interesting along with the history. There are many exhibits and well worth the time and money to understanding past history.
Looking more like a stately home than a fortress or castle, the Ptuj Castle is well worth a visit while in the lovely little town of Ptuj. It isn't a huge castle so doesn't take a long time to get around, but there are several good collections to look at.All the exhibitions have comprehensive English guide notes and, as a previous reviewer mentioned, the staff are very quick to point you in the right direction as you wander round.
The Ptuj Castle stands above the Drava river and it is a domination object of the city. The casle has an interesting architecture.
If you have a car you can drive there. Well worth the visit. Grounds have views over Ptuj with picnic table set up before the entry fee, the castle has interesting displays and you see a good many rooms.
Some very eager staff showed us the various collections of painings, weapon and Music instruments. Ask at the ticketoffice to see the carnival costumes. A few are to be tried.
It is certainly worth the walk up the hill to visit the Castle and get the lovely view over the town and the river. If you have a car you may also want to visit Ptujska-Gora which is about 20 minutes away to see the old cathedral and to get an even more majestic view over the valley. Well worth the drive.
Very interesting exhibits inside. Nice view of surrounding area. Get some exercise, walk up from the town.
As title said worth visiting however there is no real tour and guide provided. There were 4 ladies standing around and all we got was: "you go in through this door and you will come out through that door then you come downstairs and go in through that door and you'll come out there and then come and see me and I will show you which door you will use on ground door"i did not found this particularly helpful - some rooms were without English or German or Slovenian explanations
It is a good place to get some understanding about the history about Ptuji, and I think it is also a suitable place in ptuji to see the sunrise, normally no one go to there in the morning, you can wait in silence, breath fresh air , and to see the cloud turn into brilliant and colorful.Maybe, it is a so normal morning, but I like it.
I love to walk up to the castle to enjoy the view over Ptuj, the river Drava and the lake. Great place for photography.
The castle is an easy climb up the hill, and for a very reasonable 5EUR, you get a huge display of tapestries, paintings, documents, room settings and great period furniture. There were scores of pieces of furniture ranging from medieval to Biedermeier, all in great condition, and many which were not cordoned off by ropes and such. There were also a large number of musical instruments and a smal armory included, as wells as traditional Fasching costumes dating back hundreds of years. A great place to go and learn.
There is a good exhibition of the festival costumes and old musical instruments. Having paid to get into the castle, there is little way to separate those who want to see the museum and those who are there just for the cafe. You have to pay to use the toilet even though you have just paid entry to the museum. The baroque decorated rooms are fine if you like that sort of style. The paintings are mostly bad. Best for me was the large ceramic wood heaters in every room, fed through a trap door outside. Kept the servants busy.
We visited several empty palaces during our travels in Croatia and Slovenia. We were delighted when we visited this Ptuj castle with many rooms having original furnishings (check out the fireplaces in each room), paintings, weapons, musical instruments (special consoles allow you to press buttons and hear the sounds each instrument plays), and a gallery with ceremonial costumes. There are several exhibits; obtain information where you buy your tickets and they will advise you on the best way to tour the castle. We hope other travellers enjoy it as well, and the views are a bonus!
